This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.
Hourly Wage:
- $20.50/hour.
- $1.00/hour night shift differential.

Overview:
The Direct Support Advocate (DSA) is instrumental in providing essential support and assistance to individuals experiencing homelessness. The DSA is responsible for offering compassionate aid, addressing basic needs, and fostering a welcoming environment for guests. By maintaining safety, promoting inclusivity, and collaborating with fellow staff and external partners, the DSA contributes significantly to the success and well-being of those served by Lawrence Community Shelter at the main facility and at The Village.
Principal Responsibilities:
Guest Support and Assistance:
- Provide direct support and assistance to guests, addressing their basic needs and promoting their well-being.
- Engage with guests in a compassionate and respectful manner, fostering a supportive environment.
- Conduct regular check-ins with guests to assess their needs and offer assistance with accessing resources and services.
- Collaborate with other staff members to address guest concerns, resolve conflicts, and de-escalate tense situations effectively.
- Assist with general maintenance, cleaning, and sanitization to ensure a clean and safe environment.
Safety and Security:
- Maintain vigilance to ensure the safety and security of guests, staff, and facilities.
- Conduct routine patrols and inspections of the premises to identify and address any safety hazards or security concerns.
- Respond promptly to security disturbances and emergencies, following established protocols and procedures.
- Work closely with other team members to implement safety measures and maintain a secure environment.
Documentation and Recordkeeping:
- Keep accurate and detailed records of guest interactions, incidents, and activities, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and protocols.
- Document any violations of rules or policies observed and actions taken to address them, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Assist with data entry and recordkeeping tasks as needed to support the efficient operation of shelter services.
Team Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively with other staff members to coordinate efforts and share information relevant to guest support and safety.
- Participate actively in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge related to guest services and support.
- Assist with urgent operational needs and with external partners and service providers to facilitate access to resources and services for guests, promoting a holistic approach to guest support and well-being.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
- Proficient in effective communication, both orally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Capable of working collaboratively as part of a team, demonstrating effective problem-solving abilities and a willingness to assist colleagues when necessary.
- Exercises sound judgment and discretion in all interactions, maintaining confidentiality and acting with honesty and integrity at all times.
- Maintains physical capability to meet the demands of the role, including standing, lifting, and mobility for extended periods.
- Demonstrated experience using relational databases, i.e., Microsoft Office for documentation, communication, and task management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with principles of trauma-informed care, Housing First, and housing-related resources, demonstrating an understanding of the unique needs of individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Previous experience working with vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness, racial/ethnic minorities, LGBTQIA individuals, or individuals with mental health or substance use challenges.
Experience implementing and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in professional settings.

Physical Requirements:
- Able to perform physical tasks, including standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Proficient operation of office equipment involving continuous hand/arm movements.
- Ability to move about and maintain mobility for up to 10 hours per day, with frequent engagement in stationary positions for extended periods.
Miscellaneous Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to drive is not a mandatory requirement for this position but is strongly desired.
- Employees that drive as part of their job duties must meet LCS’ auto insurance.
- Must successfully pass pre-employment background screening.
