The Torts-Camp Lejeune Justice Act Section (T-CLJA) of the Civil Division is responsible for the defense of matters brought under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 (CLJA). The Section’s work involves the analysis of complex scientific and medical evidence, engagement with expert witnesses, and handling novel legal issues under this recently enacted statute. The litigation portfolio is broad, spanning both individual claims and the overarching CLJA litigation, and includes legal questions related to groundwater contamination, toxicology, epidemiology, causation, and environmental public health.
T-CLJA occupies a critical space at the intersection of environmental policy, public health, and federal liability, and its work will impact communities nationwide. The Section provides opportunities for interns to help shape broad litigation strategy and the emerging body of law under the CLJA.
