Equipment Operator Job Description Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Equipment Operator to join our dynamic construction team. The successful candidate must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and be experienced in shooting, checking, and maintaining construction elevations.
In this role, you will safely operate construction machinery and heavy equipment in support of underground utility and infrastructure projects. Your expertise will ensure that work is performed efficiently, accurately, safely, and in compliance with occupational safety requirements. This position offers the opportunity to work on diverse construction sites while applying your equipment-operation, mechanical, grading, and elevation-control skills.
Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently operate construction equipment, including excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, forklifts, dump trucks, water trucks, roll-off trucks, and tanker trucks.
- Shoot, check, and verify elevations using laser levels, grade rods, transit levels, or other surveying and grade-control equipment.
- Read and understand construction plans, utility profiles, cut sheets, benchmarks, grades, slopes, and invert elevations.
- Maintain proper trench grades and pipe elevations during the installation of underground water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and fire-line systems.
- Hold and maintain a valid CDL and safely operate commercial vehicles as required.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance to ensure machinery remains safe and operational.
- Identify and promptly report mechanical problems, safety concerns, and required equipment repairs.
- Handle and transport materials using forklifts, loaders, and other material-handling equipment.
- Follow company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and jobsite-specific safety procedures.
- Wear and properly maintain all required personal protective equipment.
- Assist with site preparation, grading, excavation, trenching, loading and unloading materials, backfilling, and jobsite cleanup.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, inspections, maintenance, and safety checks.
- Coordinate with foremen, pipelayers, helpers, and other team members to complete work accurately and on schedule.
- Protect existing utilities, structures, property, and surrounding improvements during excavation and equipment operations.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.
- Demonstrated ability to shoot, check, and maintain construction elevations is required.
- Ability to use laser levels, grade rods, transit levels, and related grade-control equipment.
- Ability to read construction plans, profiles, cut sheets, benchmarks, slopes, grades, and invert elevations.
- Experience installing underground water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, or fire-line systems is preferred.
- Extensive construction-site experience with a strong understanding of heavy-equipment operation and maintenance.
- Proficiency in operating excavators, backhoes, dozers, loaders, cranes, forklifts, and commercial trucks.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and the mechanical components of construction machinery.
- Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs using hand and specialized tools.
- Commercial driving experience with dump trucks, water trucks, roll-off trucks, tanker trucks, or similar vehicles.
- Strong knowledge of heavy-equipment safety procedures and occupational safety requirements.
- Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating jobsite activities and reporting mechanical, grade, or safety concerns.
- Dependable transportation, punctuality, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions.
- Ability to pass applicable driving-record, drug-screening, and background requirements.
