The Hearts and Minds Learning Community is hiring for an Education Assistant supporting our mixed-age classrooms: Kindergarten (ages 3-6), Early Elementary (ages 6-8), Upper Elementary (ages 8-10) and Early Middle (ages 11-13).
This position can be filled as one full-time role (35 hours/week) or as two part-time roles (18 hours/week each). Applicants must indicate their preference on their application.
The Education Assistant works alongside lead educators across all classrooms to help maintain a safe, organized and effective learning environment. Responsibilities span daily classroom logistics, hands-on instructional support, student supervision and administrative tasks.
Term: September 1, 2026 – June 11, 2027, with the potential to continue through the summer at reduced hours to support summer camp programming.
Key Responsibilities
- Classroom setup and takedown each day across classrooms as needed.
- Instructional support, assisting lead educators with delivering class activities and daily instruction.
- Student supervision and classroom management, including during transitions, independent work time and group activities.
- Lunch, snack and outdoor play supervision.
- Behavioral and special support for individual students as needed, in coordination with lead educators (limited amount of one-on-one behavioral and special support).
- Administrative tasks supporting classroom operations (materials prep, record-keeping, communication support, etc.).
- Supporting a consistent, safe and positive environment across a wide age range, from early childhood through early adolescence.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Background check clearance.
- Proficiency in basic reading, writing and mathematics.
- Previous classroom management experience working with children ages 3–10.
- Must be up to date on all required vaccinations, including seasonal flu and covid, unless medically exempt (a physician’s note is required for medical exemption).
- Must be able and willing to wear an N95 or KN95 mask while working.
Strongly Preferred
- Experience working as a paraprofessional (para) or with students receiving special education (SPED) services.
Preferred
- First Aid, CPR and/or crisis intervention certification.
Schedule & Compensation
- Full-time option: approximately 35 hours/week, one position.
- Part-time option: approximately 18 hours/week, two positions (morning assistant 9a-12:30p and afternoon assistant 12:30pm – 4pm).
- Term runs September 1, 2026 through June 11, 2027, with optional continuation through summer camp at reduced hours.
- Compensation: $23/hour, includes PAID lunch breaks. Full-time position includes benefits (part-time positions include paid time off only).

The Hearts and Minds Learning Community is located in SW Minneapolis, MN. This is an onsite position.
HMLC is an outdoors-first learning environment and we spend as much time as possible outdoors, as the weather allows. Substitute educators will need to be prepared for outdoor time with appropriate clothing (winter gear in the cold, a rain coat in the rain, for example).

**HMLC operates under a community care model. Many children and families in our program have high-risk medical conditions/are medically fragile and all adults are required to wear N95 or KN95 masks while around the children at all times - indoors and outdoors. All adults and children are required to be up to date on all vaccines, including seasonal flu and COVID vaccines (unless there is a medical exemption), to help protect the most vulnerable members of our community.
