Job Title: Aftercare Support StaffLocation: St. Sylvester School – Chicago, IL
Pay: $16.60 per hour; Monday- Friday 3 PM- 5 PM
Position Overview: St. Sylvester School is seeking caring and reliable Aftercare Support Staff to join our team. The Aftercare Program provides a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for students outside of regular school hours. The ideal candidate will actively engage with students, maintain a positive and collaborative spirit, and ensure that our aftercare program runs smoothly for students, families, and staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actively monitor, supervise, and engage with students during aftercare hours.
- Ensure aftercare spaces are clean and organized before and after use.
- Model positivity, collaboration, and professionalism at all times.
- Follow established procedures to ensure consistency in program operations.
- Communicate proactively and respectfully with students, families, and staff.
- Remind and reinforce student behavior expectations in a supportive manner.
- Implement developmentally appropriate behavior management strategies, including:
- Using action-oriented, calm, and respectful redirection.
- Facilitating learning opportunities when mistakes occur.
- Privately addressing behavioral concerns when needed.
- Refraining from any practices that embarrass or disrespect students.
- Support a healthy, active aftercare environment by:
- Going outside with students whenever the temperature (feels like) is 28°F or above.
- Facilitating active play, ensuring student safety, and moving around the space to remain attentive and engaged.
- Ensure technology-free supervision (no personal cell phone/computer use while supervising students).
- Seek approval from administration before showing TV/movies to students.
- Compliance with Archdiocese of Catholic Schools Standards of Behavior
Qualifications:
- Experience working with children preferred.
- Strong communication, patience, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to fostering a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment.
- Dependability and ability to work collaboratively with the Aftercare Coordinator and staff.
- Ability to be active, supervise outdoor play, and engage with students in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Health and Safety Trainings Required for Compliance with Action For Children* 6 hours of remote training, required immediately after hire
Compensation & Benefits:This position is non-exempt and hourly. Benefits for eligible employees include:

- Paid vacation incorporated into the school calendar (Christmas and Easter/Spring break).
- Vacation accrual for non-school employees (2 weeks after 1 year, 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 weeks after 15 years).
- Paid Holidays: Consistent with school holiday schedules.
- Sick & Personal Days: 10 paid sick days annually, with up to 2 available for personal reasons. Unused days carry over up to 120 days.
