Perioperative Registered Nurse — North River Surgical Center
North River Surgical Center (NRSC) is seeking a highly motivated Perioperative Registered Nurse to join our fast-paced, physician-owned Ambulatory Surgery Center specializing in GI endoscopy. With a strong emphasis on excellence in patient care and service, the successful candidate will apply their perioperative nursing expertise across the full continuum of the ambulatory surgical experience — from pre-procedure preparation through intraoperative support and post-anesthesia recovery. Duties
- Conduct pre-procedure telephone interviews; review medical history, medications, allergies, and NPO status; prepare charts and consent forms; perform pre-operative assessments including vital signs, medication reconciliation, and anesthesia risk screening; establish IV access; provide patient and family education.
- Provide intraoperative support during endoscopic procedures: utilize physician preference cards to prepare medications, supplies, and equipment; monitor patient condition; communicate observations to the attending physician and CRNA; administer medications per orders; handle and process specimens; operate endoscopic equipment per protocols.
- Perform post-anesthesia assessment and recovery monitoring: conduct comprehensive assessments of vital signs, consciousness, pain, and recovery progress; manage complications; confirm discharge criteria; provide discharge education to patients and responsible parties; document all assessments and discharge status.
- Complete post-procedure follow-up telephone calls; assess recovery status; address patient questions; document outcomes; escalate concerns to the attending physician as appropriate.
- Maintain efficient patient flow; assist with room turnover and restocking; adhere to infection control and scope reprocessing protocols; delegate tasks to UAP per Alabama BON guidelines; participate in QMI activities; maintain HIPAA confidentiality.
Skills
- Strong clinical judgment with the ability to recognize and respond to changes in patient condition in a fast-paced procedural environment.
- Experience with moderate/procedural sedation in an ASC or outpatient surgical setting preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional interaction with patients, families, physicians, CRNAs, and clinical staff.
- Strong accuracy and attention to detail in clinical documentation and patient care.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously; adaptable to changing patient conditions and clinical demands.
- Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and professional nursing standards.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in compliance with HIPAA.
- Proficiency with computer applications; experience with electronic health records preferred.
Licenses & Certifications
- Current Alabama RN licensure (or multi-state compact license) — active and unrestricted — required.
- BLS and ACLS — required; must obtain within 30 days of hire if not current at time of employment.
Hours: Full-time. Monday - Friday, 4-10 hour shifts between 6:00 am - 5:00 pm. Must be able to work a flexible 40-hour schedule, staying later on occasion depending on daily case load. No weekends, holidays or On-Call. GREAT Work/Life Balance.
Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience.
