Role Overview:
Improving is looking for a Senior Looker Consultant to join a major telecom provider’s Data & Analytics engagement. This is a hands-on technical role aimed at migrating high-usage Tableau dashboards to Looker, standing up a four-project hub-and-spoke LookML architecture, and establishing the semantic layer that will serve as single source of truth for enterprise metrics. The person in this role needs to know Looker and LookML deeply enough to make the right design decisions, build the right things, and guide a cross-functional team through the execution.
What You’ll Do:
Architecture and semantic layer design
- Own the design and implementation of the hub-and-spoke LookML architecture: one central looker-ssot project and three domain analytics projects.
- Define and build the gold layer semantic layer in LookML — certified views, shared measures, and Explores that serve as the single source of truth for enterprise-wide metrics.
- Establish the LookML patterns, naming conventions, folder structure, and CODEOWNERS configuration that govern how the team contributes to and evolves the semantic layer.
- Review the current architecture designs with stakeholders, incorporate feedback, and drive the architecture to a production-ready state.
Security and access model
- Implement and validate the four-layer access control model: BigQuery IAM, Looker project boundary, LookML access grants, and BigQuery column-level security.
- Configure LDAP group to Looker user attribute mappings via Google OAuth for geographic (US vs. non-US) and subdomain (Finance vs. HR) access restrictions.
- Define the sensitivity tier classification for silver and external data sources and ensure the SSOT group review process enforces the right controls at onboarding.
- Lead the technical execution of the Looker hub-and-spoke architecture, covering: gold layer semantic layer definition, GitLab MR workflow end-to-end, dashboard consumption from JavaScript Embed SDK and Studio Pro, spoke import and version propagation, and all security model validation scenarios.
- Define pass/fail criteria for each POC test case and produce a clear readout for the CTO review.
Governance and team enablement
- Configure the GitLab repository structure, Merge Requests Required setting, Advanced Deploy Mode, and CODEOWNERS rules that enforce the governance model structurally.
- Define the Looker Marketplace publishing process so certified metrics are distributed to domain teams without manual coordination.
- Enable domain BI teams to contribute to the semantic layer through the governed MR workflow — mentor them on LookML best practices and the hub-and-spoke model.
- Contribute to the automated low-usage detection job and the periodic governance process for retiring stale content.
Requirements:
- 6+ years of experience in data and analytics, with at least 3 years working directly in Looker and LookML in a production environment.
- Deep LookML expertise: views, models, Explores, derived tables, access grants, access filters, user attributes, project imports, and refinements.
- Experience designing and implementing a multi-project Looker architecture — you have done this, not just read about it.
- Strong working knowledge of BigQuery: dataset structure, IAM, column-level security via Data Catalog policy tags, and service account-based access patterns.
- Experience with GitLab or GitHub: branch strategy, merge request workflows, CODEOWNERS, and CI/CD integration with Looker.
- Ability to lead technical discovery: you can take a Tableau workbook, identify the underlying data sources and business logic, and translate it into a LookML design.
- Strong communication skills
Highly Preferred:
- Experience with Looker's Advanced Deploy Mode and Deployment Manager.
- Familiarity with Teradata and experience coordinating data migrations from Teradata to BigQuery.Experience with Looker Studio Pro and the Looker Embed SDK for JavaScript applications.
- Knowledge of LDAP directory services and Google Workspace group sync for identity federation into Looker.
- Exposure to enterprise BI governance frameworks — metric certification programs, data catalogs (Alation preferred), semantic layer standardization.
- Prior experience in a consulting or client-facing engagement where you owned both the technical delivery and the stakeholder relationship.
