Job Title: Sports Editor
Location: Hibbing, MN
The Sports Editor is the lead staff editor in overseeing day-to-day local Sports news coverage, planning content, determining story placement, making photographic and graphics requests, assigning and editing stories, and supervising and coordinating reporters’ and sports copy editors’ activities and schedules. The Sports Editor also oversees selection and placement of regional, national and international sports news coverage. The Sports Editor may be required to design and paginate Sports section pages, or oversee their design and pagination. The Sports Editor ensures that highest coverage priority goes to local sports and recreational programs, activities and athletes.
Location
The city of Hibbing, MN is located on the Iron Range, Northern St. Louis County, well known for its Mining industry in Northeast Minnesota. There is no shortage of news to cover, with a highly active city government and school district, healthy service groups, a wide range of nonprofits and small businesses, a robust arts scene, and several frequently debated issues.
Essential Functions

Communicate clearly with reporters to help them develop coverage strategies and story ideas.

Work Environment
The Sports newsroom is an intense, demanding environment that requires steady leadership skills and consistent focus. The Sports Editor should maintain a calm, objective and professional demeanor in adverse or emergency situations. The Sports Editor must cordially handle inquiries or observations from the public, including angry responses. The Sports Editor must treat reporters and other Newsroom workers with dignity and respect while defining and enforcing expectations.
Requirements

Working experience in the journalistic field, preferably with writing background

Strong writing skills and an excellent portfolio

A proven ability to be both self-sufficient and capable of working in a team
