For over 55 years Vincent Associates has designed and manufactured UNIBLITZ® electro-mechanical shutters used worldwide in laser, imaging, semiconductor, aerospace, and scientific-research systems. As we modernize and expand our product line, we are adding a Mechanical Design Engineer who can blend classic precision-machining savvy with modern mechatronics and CAD skills.
The Role
You will lead mechanical design efforts for our electro-mechanical shutter product line, from initial concepts and CAD models through prototype testing and production release. Day-to-day work includes creating and revising SolidWorks assemblies and drawings, specifying components, working with cross-functional teams to refine requirements, and supporting manufacturing with clear build documentation and problem-solving on the shop floor. You’ll balance performance, cost, and reliability targets while helping to modernize our processes and product portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Product & Component Design: Create 3D models, assemblies, and detailed drawings in SolidWorks (our standard), ensuring DFM/A and tolerance stack-ups meet performance and cost goals.
- Prototype & Test: Rapidly iterate electromechanical prototypes, specify off-the-shelf motors/coils/magnets, and coordinate in-house or vendor builds.
- Production Support: Update work instructions, fixtures, and BOMs; troubleshoot build issues on the shop floor; champion continuous-improvement/lean events.
- ISO 9001 Implementation: Draft or revise procedures, records, and risk assessments to meet QMS requirements; participate in internal audits.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with firmware, electronics, and sales teams to integrate drivers, GUI control, and customer feedback into designs.
Qualifications for Mechanical Engineer
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (part, assembly, and drawing environments).
- Fundamental understanding of mechanics of materials, tolerance analysis, and GD&T.
- Ability to clearly communicate design intent through drawings, presentations, and shop-floor discussions.
Preferred / Bonus Skills
- Electromagnetic actuator or magnetics design experience.
- Exposure to electronics, embedded systems, or Python/Matlab/LabVIEW scripting for test automation.
- Familiarity with mechatronics, robotics, or precision motion.
- Hands-on shop skills (machining, 3-D printing, soldering, basic PCB re-work).
- Experience authoring or editing ISO 9001 documents, work instructions, or PFMEAs.
What We Offer
- Impact from Day 1: Small-company agility; your designs ship to space telescopes, synchrotrons, and cutting-edge fabs.
- Mentorship & Growth: Senior engineers with decades of optical-shutter know-how plus training budgets and conference travel.
- Competitive salary (tailored to experience), SIMPLE IRA with match, health benefits, profit sharing, paid time off.
Vincent Associates is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values diversity in our workplace. We welcome all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, sex, age, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, pregnancy, marital status, veteran or military status, genetic information or sexual orientation.
