CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform crew work in assisting with road and right-of-way maintenance
activities including mowing, sign installation and maintenance, flagging traffic and other assigned tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not
exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Other duties may be required and assigned.

Maintains landscape areas along roads and right-of-ways; mows grass using various mowers; trims right-of-ways and
various tree limbs; participates in grass and other seed plantings; removes trash and other debris.

Installs, repairs and maintains road signs; receives and performs sign detail assignments.

Assists in directing and flagging traffic to protect assigned work areas

Assists with road maintenance tasks, utilizing assigned equipment, including putting out asphalt, repairing potholes.

Performs related departmental duties; cleans holding ponds; installs fencing; assists with driveway installation; assists
with routine maintenance and clean-up tasks; assists with equipment and vehicle maintenance and minor repair tasks.

Operates a variety of hand tools and related landscape maintenance equipment as necessary to complete essential
functions.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; one to two years of experience in operating various hand tools, equipment maintenance,
traffic flagging, or related experience with knowledge of road signs; or any equivalent combination of education,
training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and
maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information. Includes
performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May
include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic
form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of
action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving
a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work,
typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and
that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50
pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks
require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental
conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes,
machinery, vibrations, and traffic hazards.
