Maintenance Worker – Vieques National Wildlife Refuge (Vieques, Puerto Rico)
We are seeking a qualified Maintenance Worker to support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s maintenance program at the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Vieques, Puerto Rico. This position requires hands-on facility and grounds maintenance, equipment operation, and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform grounds maintenance on grades and slopes using hand tools and power equipment (hatchets, saws, trimmers, mowers, etc.).
- Cut trees, maintain trails, firebreaks, roads, parking lots, and other facilities.
- Assist in construction, rehabilitation, and preventive maintenance projects.
- Load, unload, and move heavy materials; perform basic carpentry, plumbing, and garbage pickup.
- Operate USFWS tractors, vehicles, and small machinery; conduct daily preventative maintenance and minor repairs.
- Maintain written maintenance records for all operated equipment.
- Conduct regular safety checks and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance requests and incidents.
- Assist with event setup and support special projects as assigned, including at other Caribbean refuges if required.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience operating gasoline or diesel-powered tractors, trucks, and trailers.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
- Ability to obtain USFWS Defensive Driving and other required certifications.
- Basic knowledge and skills in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, auto mechanics, and groundskeeping.
- Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally over 50 pounds with assistance.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Completion of a background investigation.
- Ability to wear a uniform (not a USFWS uniform) and all required safety gear.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day.
