Schedule: 3 Part-Time positions, Approximately 4 hours per week
Two evenings per week at each Adult Education site - Bangor, Paw Paw, and Covert (approximately 2 hours per evening). Schedule follows the Adult Education calendar.
The Adult Education Child Care Assistant plays an essential role in supporting adult learners by providing safe, reliable, and engaging childcare during Adult Education classes. This position exists to remove one of the most common barriers to participation—access to quality childcare—allowing parents and caregivers to fully engage in educational opportunities that strengthen their skills, improve employment opportunities, and support their families. The Child Care Assistant creates a welcoming, nurturing environment where children are safe, cared for, and engaged while their parents pursue their educational goals, contributing to the overall success of the Adult Education program.
- Provide safe, attentive, and age-appropriate care for children during Adult Education class sessions.
- Supervise children in accordance with established safety procedures and program expectations.
- Plan and facilitate simple educational, recreational, and developmentally appropriate activities.
- Foster a welcoming, positive, and inclusive environment for children and families.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe childcare space during each session.
- Communicate professionally with parents and Adult Education staff regarding concerns, or needs.
- Follow all Van Buren ISD policies and procedures regarding child supervision, confidentiality, emergency response, and student safety.
- Monitor supplies and notify the Adult Education Coordinator when materials need to be replenished.
- Perform other duties as assigned that support the Adult Education program.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with young children in a childcare, preschool, school, recreation, or similar setting.
- Ability to create a safe, caring, and engaging environment for children of varying ages.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of responsibility and professionalism.
- Reliable transportation to Adult Education program sites.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to successfully complete all required background checks.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse families.
- Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate activities.
- Ability to actively supervise children in an indoor setting.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
