Field Service Technician — Critical Power Systems & Transfer Switch.
Full-Time | Boonton, NJ home base | Service area: NYC metro + Northern NJ
Most technician jobs are interchangeable. This one isn't. ATS Controls LLC provides comprehensive emergency power services — specializing in the continuous reliability of automatic transfer switches (ATS) and paralleling gear (P-gear) for hospitals and commercial facilities across NYC and Northern New Jersey.
We service the industry’s primary manufacturers (ASCO, Russelectric, Zenith) and our work ranges from meticulous scheduled maintenance and regulatory compliance testing through 24/7 emergency repair and system testing.
We’re hiring a Field Service Technician to help carry the load. You’ll be trained into a specialist in automatic transfer switches, paralleling gear, and standby power systems, a high-demand niche that pays a premium and that most technicians never get exposure to. You’ll learn directly under ownership backed by 60+ years of combined industry experience, on real commercial accounts - NYC hospitals, data centers, critical infrastructure. We’re a small shop based in Boonton: your work is visible, valued, and rewarded.
What You'll do?
- Service, maintain, and repair automatic transfer switches and paralleling gear at commercial and hospital sites.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and respond to service calls.
- Support start-up services and system testing on existing equipment retrofits and upgrades.
- Diagnose faults and document work clearly for customers.
- Participate in a fair, scheduled on-call rotation for emergency power issues (extra pay).
- Build relationships with repeat customers and represent the business professionally on site.
What we're looking for?
- Solid mechanical and electrical fundamentals ( transfer-switch or generator experience is a plus, not a requirement)
- Comfortable with NYC commercial work and the commute that comes with it.
- Reliable, safety-minded, and comfortable working independently at customer sites.
- Valid driver's license, clean enough record to eventually drive a company vehicle.
- Willingness to learn standby power systems.
- For apprenticeship-track candidates: interest in pursuing your NJ electrical license through supervised work hours.
What we offer (that the big shops can't).
- Direct training and mentorship under 60+ years of combined industry experience — not a layer of managers between you and decisions.
- Real say in how the work gets done.
- A clear pay ladder: apprentice → journeyman → lead technician.
- Paid apprenticeship pathway for candidates pursuing an NJ electrical license.
- Predictable base schedule (7 AM on-site to 3 PM typical), with clearly-defined overtime pay.
- Company credit card for all business expenses: tolls, parking, gas, all covered.
- Company vehicle after probation period.
- Health insurance and 401(k) with 3% match.
- A small-team feel where the work you do is visible and rewarded.
- Pay & Schedule Base hourly by experience tier, with overtime after 40 hours per week: Apprentice: $20–$30/hour (entry-level, with paid training) Journeyman-level: $30–$40/hour Lead technician: $40–$50+/hour.
- On-call rotation compensation: negotiated at hire based on schedule and rotation frequency.
- Baseline Schedule, typical scheduled maintenance days are 7 AM to 3 PM on-site at customer locations across NYC. Earlystarts to beat traffic — our owner typically leaves the house around 5:30 AM and returns home around 4:30 PM. Weekend and emergency work happens on a fair rotation with extra pay attached.
The Honest Reality This isn't a 9-to-5 desk job. Some days you're on-site at an NYC hospital at 7 AM. Some days you're home by 4:30. Some weeks you'll work seven straight, some you won't. We tell you this upfront because it's the truth, and we'd rather you know now than learn three weeks in. If you're the right person, you'll see the variety as a feature — not a bug — because every day is different and you'll learn more in 90 days than most technicians learn in two years.
