MENTAL HEALTH FACILITATOR & COMMUNITY ADVOCATE
Reports To: Program Director
Status: Part-Time (15-30 hours weekly)
Salary: $20-$23 per hour
Position Summary
NAMI York-Adams Counties is seeking a versatile, creative, and highly adaptable individual to serve as a Mental Health Facilitator & Community Advocate. This is a hands-on, community-facing position for someone who enjoys meaningful work, varied responsibilities, and actively involved in the day-to-day work of a small nonprofit organization.
They will help facilitate the PAUSE school-based mental health program, support additional NAMI programs and groups, create and appear in digital content, represent NAMI at community events, build relationships with community partners, and assist with advocacy, outreach, fundraising, and organizational initiatives.
Essential Responsibilities
- Facilitate PAUSE — Prepare for and cofacilitate PAUSE sessions for middle and high school students in a trauma‑informed, youth‑appropriate environment.
- Follow Procedures — Adhere to all PAUSE curriculum requirements, NAMI policies, school district protocols, mandated reporting, and emergency procedures.
- Documentation — Complete attendance, evaluations, incident reports, and outcome tracking accurately and on time.
- Professional Communication — Maintain boundaries, protect confidentiality, and communicate professionally with students, school staff, partners, and NAMI leadership.
Community Outreach, Advocacy, Engagement, & Fundraising
- Community Representation — Represent NAMI York Adams at schools, health fairs, festivals, conferences, and community events. Transport, set up, operate, and break down outreach displays and materials.
- Public Engagement — Speak confidently about NAMI’s mission and programs; distribute resources and connect individuals to appropriate services.
- Relationship Building — Build positive relationships with schools, service providers, businesses, volunteers, and community partners; assist leadership with outreach.
- Campaign & Flexibility— Support fundraising and awareness campaigns, adapt to changing priorities, and perform other mission aligned duties as assigned.
- Content Development — Help create educational, engaging, mission aligned social media ideas, research topics and assist with scripting and planning.
- Content Production — Film, photograph, produce, and edit short form videos, graphics, posts, stories, and other digital materials; appear on camera when appropriate.
Schedule, Travel, and Flexibility Expectations
This position requires significant scheduling adaptability because NAMI programs and community activities occur in different locations and at different times. Flexibility does not mean being permanently on call; it means being able to adjust to a varied, advance-planned schedule and shifting organizational priorities.
- Work Schedule — Regular weekday availability during school hours; weekly schedules vary by school calendars and organizational priorities; occasional evenings and weekends required.
- Work Locations — Local travel across York and Adams Counties. Work may occur at schools, the NAMI office, partner sites, community events, or other approved locations.
- Dependability— Staff receive schedule updates in advance and are expected to arrive prepared and on time for all accepted assignments.
Required Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Genuine interest in mental health education, youth support, community service, and NAMI’s mission.
- Ability to connect appropriately with middle and high school students.
- Comfort speaking with individuals, groups, school personnel, and members of the public.
- Willingness to appear in photographs and video content as part of assigned social media responsibilities.
- Ability or willingness to learn basic video recording, editing, graphic design, and social media tools.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, follow procedures, meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.
- Sound judgment, emotional maturity, reliability, and respect for confidentiality.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel locally.
- Ability to complete all required clearances, screenings, and training before performing applicable duties.
- Availability to work approximately 15-30 hours per week, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Windows, Mac, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite proficiency required
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with youth, schools, nonprofits, mental health programs, education, outreach, communications, or community services.
- Experience creating social media content or using tools such as Canva, CapCut, Adobe products, or similar platforms.
- Experience with public speaking, group facilitation, event outreach, advocacy, or fundraising.
- Familiarity with NAMI programs, mental health resources, trauma-informed practices, or peer-support principles.
- Personal or family lived experience with mental health challenges, when the applicant is comfortable bringing that perspective to the role.
Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
