Job Summary:
The Color & New Products Supervisor is responsible for producing high-quality annuals, perennials, and tropical plants that meet Greenleaf Nursery's standards for excellence. This position oversees all aspects of crop production, including irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease management, pruning, plant growth regulation, scheduling, and quality control.
In addition to managing color production, this role leads the evaluation of new plant varieties through organized trial programs. The supervisor monitors plant performance, documents trial results, maintains demonstration landscapes, and collaborates with production and sales teams to help determine the adoption of new products.
The ideal candidate combines strong horticultural expertise with leadership skills, organizational ability, and a passion for continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Crop Management
- Oversee the daily production and care of annuals, perennials, and tropical crops.
- Monitor plant health through proper irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease management, pruning, and plant growth regulation.
- Develop crop schedules, plan liner purchases and monitor production timelines to meet target availability dates.
- Plan space allocation, shearing schedules, and weather protection throughout the crop cycle.
- Maintain growing areas to ensure clean, safe, and efficient operations.
New Product Development
- Manage inventory and production of all new product trial materials.
- Observe and document plant performance, including: Growth rate, growth habit, flower color and bloom timing, cold hardiness and overall marketability and salability
- Provide detailed evaluations that support future product selection and development.
- Maintain the new product trial gardens, landscape beds, and office landscape.
Planning & Budget Management
Working closely with the Production Manager, the supervisor will:
- Develop and manage annual labor and operating budgets.
- Forecast seasonal labor requirements.
- Plan purchases of liners, tools, equipment, and production supplies.
- Track productivity metrics and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Team Collaboration
- Partner with production teams to coordinate crop schedules and production priorities.
- Collaborate with the Sales Department to ensure product availability dates remain accurate.
- Oversee the pulling and staging of color orders for shipment.
- Promote a culture focused on teamwork, quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
Required
- Experience growing annuals, perennials, and tropical crops in a commercial nursery environment.
- Strong understanding of horticultural best management practices.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems, plant nutrition, pest management, and crop scheduling.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Preferred
- Experience with plant trials and new product evaluation.
- Familiarity with production planning and budgeting.
- Knowledge of Greenleaf Nursery's plant portfolio and production systems.
Pay: From $50,000.00 per year
