Under the direct supervision of a Shift Captain, the Volunteer Firefighter is responsible for supporting the Klein Fire Department's mission by responding to emergency incidents, participating in required training, maintaining operational readiness during assigned shifts, assisting with community risk reduction and public education initiatives, and performing other duties consistent with Department policies and operational needs.
Volunteer Firefighters are expected to perform assigned duties safely, professionally, and in accordance with Department policies, Standard Operating Practices, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Volunteer Participation Expectations
Volunteer Firefighters are expected to:

Maintain active membership by meeting the Department's minimum of three (3) 12-hour shifts each month.

Participate in required training, drills, and continuing education.

Maintain all required certifications.
-
Participate in Department meetings, public education events, and community outreach activities when requested.

Successfully complete the probationary firefighter program.
-
Maintain professional conduct and represent the Department positively both on and off duty.
Essential Firefighter Functions

Be familiar with all Department policies, Standard Operating Practices, rules, and regulations.

Maintain physical and mental fitness necessary to safely perform assigned duties.

Safely perform firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, and related emergency response duties.

Maintain operational readiness of assigned apparatus, equipment, PPE, and station facilities.
-
Maintain knowledge of first-due response areas, hydrant locations, target hazards, and preplans.
-
Respond to emergency incidents as assigned.

Participate safely and professionally in fire suppression, rescue, EMS, hazardous materials, and other emergency operations.

Participate in company inspections, pre-fire planning, and community risk reduction activities.
-
Participate in scheduled drills, training programs, and continuing education.

Wear and properly utilize all required personal protective equipment.

Maintain professionalism when interacting with citizens, fellow members, mutual aid agencies, and other partners.

Complete required reports accurately and within established timelines.

Maintain assigned station, apparatus, equipment, and personal appearance in accordance with Department standards.

Comply with all Department safety policies and risk management practices.

Assist with Department events, public education, and special assignments as requested.

Maintain required certifications and continuing education requirements.

Meet minimum volunteer participation requirements established by the Department.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED.
-
Successful completion of an approved Fire Academy

Hold a valid CPR certification or a Texas EMS certification (EMR, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic)
Preferred Education

Associate degree or higher in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field.

Additional Requirements

Possess a valid Texas Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Successfully complete the Department probationary firefighter program.

Maintain compliance with Department minimum shift participation requirements.

Maintain all required certifications throughout membership.

Successfully complete Department-required continuing education and annual training.

Successfully complete criminal background investigations and any required medical evaluations or substance testing.

Comply with all Department policies, Standard Operating Practices, and Code of Conduct.
