Overview
Located in the heart of the village of Williamsville, Open Door Nursery School (ODNS) has been serving the community since 1970 and is seeking a teacher (2’s program and 3’s program) to join the school. Today the nursery school continues to serve as a non-profit, non-denominational play-based morning preschool for children ages 2 to 5, offering a nurturing, safe, creative, and fun environment that allows children to explore the world they live in while promoting all aspects of development.
Responsibilities
- Create a comfortable, caring environment to promote successful separation and love of school
- Plan curriculum and daily lesson plans
- Plan developmentally appropriate activities to inspire social, emotional, physical and intellectual development
- Review daily lesson plans with aide
- Encourage exploration and discovery through hands on activities
- Plan interactive activities to promote language and vocabulary development
- Integrate art projects, songs, finger plays, role playing , rhymes, stories into daily routine
- Familiarize children with number concepts using games, songs and manipulatives
- Set up free play activity centers, set out art and craft materials
- Devise seasonal or unit-based bulletin boards
- Greet parents and students at door
- Supervise and guide free-play
- Conduct circle times
- Direct and supervise large motor play (gym or outdoors)
- Supervise dismissal time
- Maintain a safe and healthy classroom
- Assess student’s progress, identify those who may have learning delays and consult with parents when appropriate
- Communicate informally with parents daily and formally during semi-annual parent-teacher conferences
- Write a welcome-to-school letter/postcard to students prior to first day of school
- Conduct an informal “Meet & Greet” for parents and students prior to the first day of school.
- Conduct parent orientation meeting in August prior to start of school
- Develop program for Parent Open House in fall
- Write a monthly newsletter to classroom families
- Prepare parent information (class lists, permission/request slips, etc)
- Plan the snack calendar per semester
- Attend monthly staff meetings
- Report any art, craft or supply needs to Director
- Attend set up, clean up and Open House dates throughout year
Required Skills
- Thorough understanding of educational licensing requirements, and other local and state guidelines and requirements
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with adults and children
- Ability to collaborate and communicate with teachers, support staff, members of the church, parents, and students in a positive and constructive way
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software as required for recordkeeping and documentation
Education and Experience
- 2+ years of teaching experience required
- Bachelor’s degree in education or similar field
- New York State teaching certification preferred
