911 Dispatchers must respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance and information. They must provide dispatch and communication support services for Police, Fire, EMS, and related services.

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED, possess a valid driver’s license and not have any felony convictions or any criminal history. This includes negative interactions with law enforcement.
Candidates for this position will undergo a background investigation that meets all local, state and federal requirements, drug screen, and physical examination, which may include both a vision and hearing test. There will also be a computer simulated aptitude test.
911 dispatcher employment includes the completion of a comprehensive training program during the first year of employment. This includes classroom training and extensive on-the-job training. All training and certifications will be paid for by Iosco County 911.
Responsibilities
- Answer and triage emergency calls promptly using established protocols, determining priority and appropriate response.
- Dispatch police, fire, or medical units via multi-line phone systems and radio, coordinating units and sharing critical information.
- Provide clear, concise directions and situational updates to responders; monitor incidents and re-prioritize as needed.
- Obtain essential information, perform basic data entry, and maintain accurate incident records for reporting and accountability.
- Maintain composure under stress, practice effective communication, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure public safety.
Summary
A 911 Dispatcher serves as the first point of contact for emergency calls, coordinating rapid response and information flow to first responders. Reporting to the Communications or Public Safety Operations supervisor, the role requires strong dispatching, first aid, and communication skills to assess incidents, prioritize tasks, and relay accurate details.
