About the role
This Is The Place Foundation is seeking a collaborative, experienced Controller to lead our finance team. Working in close partnership with and reporting to our Chief Operating Officer, this is a great opportunity for an accounting professional who wants a leadership role in a mission-driven organization, to help shape processes, strengthen internal controls, and elevate financial reporting as the Foundation grows.
The Controller will manage day-to-day accounting operations, oversee the general ledger, and supervise a Staff Accountant / Bookkeeper.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including all journal entries and adjusting/accrual entries
- Review bank reconciliations and ticket/retail reconciliations prepared by the Staff Accountant; resolve exceptions and discrepancies
- Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules for the COO, Executive Director, Board/Finance Committee and development.
- Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Serve as the Foundation's primary point of contact for the annual audit and tax filings (e.g., Form 990)
- Own the chart of accounts and ensure consistent, accurate coding across departments and revenue streams (admissions, retail, trail rides, events)
- Support budgeting and forecasting for the COO and department heads.
- Oversee data integrity across finance systems, including reconciliation of POS/ticketing data to the general ledger and development.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate the Staff Accountant / Bookkeeper
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or review capacity
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred (fund accounting, restricted vs. unrestricted revenue)
- Experience with POS/ticketing systems and reconciling operational revenue data to the GL is a plus
- Strong proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar) and Excel
- High attention to detail and sound judgment in identifying and resolving discrepancies
