State Requirements - Education, Licensure, and Certification
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
- Valid Texas Standard Certificate in Special Education (EC-12), issued by the Texas Education Agency (TEA)
- Passing score on the TExES Special Education EC-12 examination
- Completion of a TEA-approved educator preparation program, including required practicum hours
- Special education teachers of record must hold appropriate grade-banded content certification for each assigned subject area, or demonstrate content competency per TEA guidelines.
Typical Job Duties
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Provide specialized instruction to students with disabilities in a school-based setting
- Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and school staff
- Track and document student progress toward IEP goals
- Communicate with families regarding student progress and IEP updates
- Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings
- Adapt curriculum and materials to meet diverse student needs
- Maintain accurate records in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements
