Why does the job exist?
This Position is charged with the protection of public health by supervising technical staff who regulate food service establishments, aquatic facilities and on-site septic systems through inspection and permit application review.
The position serves as the primary decision-maker for all Environmental Health Bureau program activities within the assigned field offices. It provides guidance and direction to staff and the public regarding enforcement, permitting, inspections, and complaint investigations. The Manager oversees the implementation and resolution of enforcement actions. The position also monitors compliance with state policies, mentors staff, and advises District management on program operations and policy.
How does it get done?
- Conduct employee evaluations
- Oversee assigned vehicle fleet and other assigned assets
- Oversee staff training and certifications
- Oversee administrative assistant staff deliverables e.g., invoicing, payments, data entry
- Oversee technical staff deliverables e.g., program applications, inspections and complaint response
- Coordinate and lead enforcement actions
- Insure Inspection of Public Records Requests are responded to appropriately

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Physical, Natural, Biological, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, Engineering, or Chemistry and six (6) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, animal science, natural science, biological science, physical science, air quality management, engineering, chemistry, geology, hazardous waste management, wildlife management, and/or water resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
