POSITION SUMMARY:
First to respond to animal residents’ mental and physical needs, to provide a higher quality of life and a clean, safe, and healthy living environment. Ensure exceptional customer service for all who interact with UCHS. Council customers and community on all services offered by UCHS in such a way as to increase their support of our mission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES as an Animal Care Associate:
● Uphold UCHS's mission
● Cleans, sanitizes, and disinfects animal living environments to ensure overall animal health and comfort.
● Moves dogs as needed to complete cleaning procedures.
● Monitors and reports changes or concerns in animal health and/or behavior to the vet assistant and staff, and volunteers when necessary.
● Assists where directed in the vetting of animals (medications, nail trims, etc.)
● Follows proper safety protocols for people and animals and sets a high standard for quality animal handling.
● Consistently monitors and instructs West Central staff on following assigned duties.
● Guides volunteers regarding animal needs and procedures for handling.
● Provides yard time and walks for dogs throughout the day.
● Monitor dogs when they are out in the yard. Works with dogs to establish play groups and/or fence buddies.
● Establishes and implements various enrichment for cats and dogs.
● Commits to personal, professional development.
● Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES as an ADOPTION COUNSELOR:
● Serve as the primary customer service provider for UCHS guests.
a. Greet customers with a smile and a positive attitude.
b. Assist guests interacting with adoptable animals and recommend potential pets who would be a good fit.
c. Provide general information about the behavior and care of animals available for adoption.
d. Assist clients picking up adopted animals following surgery, answering questions and providing post-operative instructions.
e. Demonstrate empathy for all.
● Answer the phone and screen and return calls. Seek input where needed/unsure in responses.
● Process applications using the ShelterLuv system. Provide suggestions on the use of the software.
● Issue dog licenses.
● Respond to emails and seek input where needed/unsure in responses.
● File essential forms.
● Be a helpful encouraging resource to volunteers.
● Promote communication, operate as a liaison to build cooperation.
● Work closely with UCHS staff to ensure accurate communication of information.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
● Basic animal care and handling skills.
● Committed to maintaining a high standard of care for animals and supporting the mission of UCHS.
● No allergies to animals.
● Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
● A collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations.
● The ability to work longer hours when necessary and demanded by population and/or special cases.
- A knowledge of computer use and ability to learn new software.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License and an insurable driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation. Position includes frequent bending and stretching as well as standing for long periods of time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a normal shelter setting. Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, parasites, and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals. Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament.
