Position Summary
The Ambulatory Technician / Medical Assistant serves as a key member of the School-Based Health Center team, providing both administrative and clinical support. This role is the first point of contact for patients and families while also assisting providers with patient care, scheduling, registration, and clinical preparation activities.
Key ResponsibilitiesFront Desk & Patient Reception
- Serve as the first point of contact for patients, families, and visitors
- Coordinate front desk operations and patient flow
- Answer and triage incoming phone calls and messages
- Assist with patient check-in and virtual visit coordination
- Address questions and concerns in a professional and supportive manner
Registration & Scheduling
- Collect and verify patient demographic and insurance information
- Schedule and manage provider and walk-in appointments
- Complete insurance verification and follow-up tasks
- Request and coordinate medical records for continuity of care
- Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record system
Clinical Support
- Obtain and document patient histories and chief complaints
- Measure and record vital signs (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate)
- Perform vision and hearing screenings
- Conduct point-of-care testing and assist with phlebotomy
- Prepare patients for provider examinations
- Provide basic first aid as needed
- Clean and disinfect exam rooms and clinical spaces
- Process laboratory specimens for courier pickup
- Support patient follow-up and appointment reminders
Additional Responsibilities
- Scan and manage medical records and enrollment documents
- Update clinic and school-based enrollment lists
- Support outreach activities and community engagement events
- Provide Spanish/English interpretation support when needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of customer service or healthcare support experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, EMR systems)
- Reliable transportation
Preferred:
- Associate degree in a healthcare-related field
- Medical Assistant, CNA, Health Aide, or similar clinical support experience
- Familiarity with medical terminology and ambulatory care workflows
- Experience working with diverse or urban populations
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills
Certifications
- CPR certification required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire and maintained thereafter
