The Activities Music Assistant will coordinate activities with the Activities Director using music that will cater to a patient’s individual or group needs. The Music Assistant works with patients individually or in groups by encouraging them to play, listen or move to music as part of their daily activity program. Music will be incorporated through the use of instrumental or vocal activities into a patient’s daily life to give them a feeling of accomplishment, and feel that they have contributed to a piece of work with their own talent. The objective of a music assistant is to observe a patient’s physical or mental state and construct a plan involving music that will stimulate their mind and relax their body.
· Must be able to read musical notations
· Must be able to play and perform on the piano or guitar adequately
· Must be able to play to sing proficiently
· Preferably able to play and perform a second musical instrument
· Will be comfortable with public speaking and performance
· Must be accepting that the job has other responsibilities and tasks besides music
· Must be a quick learner, able to lead activities to an older population and keep attention of residents
· Must be willing to learn music that the residents know and love
· Creativity is a must
· Must be able to work in a healthcare setting; 1 evening shift per week and a minimum of 1 weekend per month
· Must be able to work with patients who are extremely ill and even dying
· Music degree/certified music therapist not required, but a plus
· Must be able to work in a fast paced, team environment
· Experience not necessary, but a plus
