Position Summary
The Medical Technologist/Laboratory Consultant is responsible for providing professional oversight, consultation, and technical expertise for the clinical laboratory. This position ensures laboratory testing is performed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and CLIA regulations. The consultant serves as a resource for providers and staff, supports quality improvement initiatives, and promotes excellence in patient care through effective laboratory operations.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLaboratory Operations
· Provide consultation and oversight for daily laboratory operations.
· Ensure compliance with CLIA, OSHA, CDC, and applicable state regulations.
· Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and quality assurance programs.
· Review laboratory workflows and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and patient care.
· Assist with the implementation and validation of new laboratory tests and instrumentation.
· Monitor laboratory inventory, supplies, and equipment maintenance.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
· Oversee quality control procedures and proficiency testing programs.
· Conduct routine audits of laboratory documentation and testing practices.
· Investigate quality concerns and implement corrective action plans.
· Prepare the laboratory for regulatory inspections and accreditation surveys.
· Maintain required laboratory records and documentation.
Technical Support
· Serve as a clinical resource for Lab Director, physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and laboratory personnel.
· Assist with troubleshooting instrumentation, quality control failures, and testing issues.
· Interpret quality assurance data and recommend improvements.
· Ensure appropriate specimen collection, handling, storage, and transportation procedures are followed.
Education & Training
· Train and educate laboratory and clinical staff on laboratory procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
· Maintain staff competency documentation as required by CLIA.
· Provide updates on changes in laboratory regulations, testing methodologies, and best practices.
Safety
· Promote compliance with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards and laboratory safety requirements.
· Monitor infection prevention practices within the laboratory.
· Ensure proper disposal of biohazardous materials and sharps.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related laboratory science.
· Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/ASCP), Medical Technologist (MT/ASCP), or equivalent certification required.
· Minimum of 4 (four) years of clinical laboratory experience; supervisory or consulting experience preferred.
· Thorough knowledge of CLIA regulations, laboratory quality systems, OSHA standards, and quality assurance principles.
· Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR) preferred.
· Excellent organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements
· Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
· Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
· Manual dexterity sufficient to operate laboratory equipment and perform specimen handling.
· Visual acuity to distinguish color changes and read laboratory instruments.
Work Environment
· Physician office laboratory, outpatient clinic, or ambulatory healthcare setting.
· Frequent exposure to biological specimens and laboratory chemicals while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
· Interaction with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, patients, and regulatory agencies.

Pay: $15.00 - $33.00 per hour
