About SJC
Social Justice Collaborative (“SJC”) is a nonprofit legal-services organization providing free and low-cost legal assistance to low-income immigrants. Our team includes employees in the United States and team members working abroad through an employer-of-record partner.
The Role
Reporting to the Executive Director and supervising the HR Assistant, the HR Manager leads SJC’s U.S. human resources function and coordinates employment support for team members abroad.
This is a hands-on role covering employee relations, recruitment, performance management, benefits and payroll coordination, protected leave, workers’ compensation, training, HR policies, and employment compliance and more.
What You’ll Do
- Advise the Executive Director and supervisors on personnel matters, HR policies, performance concerns, and workplace decisions.
- Handle employee-relations matters involving performance, conduct, conflict, complaints, and corrective action.
- Conduct or support fair and well-documented workplace investigations.
- Develop and maintain practical HR policies and procedures.
- Monitor federal, state, and local employment requirements and coordinate with qualified advisers when specialized guidance is needed.
- Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and offboarding.
- Manage the performance-review process and help supervisors give effective feedback and address performance concerns.
- Coordinate employee training and professional-development activities.
- Administer applicable federal, state, and local protected leaves and workplace accommodations, including FMLA where applicable.
- Coordinate workers’ compensation claims, employee communications, and return-to-work matters with the appropriate carrier or broker.
- Coordinate employee benefits and payroll with the Finance Director, payroll provider, benefits partners, and EOR.
- Review payroll and employment changes for accuracy and help resolve employee questions.
- Maintain accurate and confidential personnel information in SJC’s HR, payroll, and performance-management systems.
- Supervise the HR Assistant, establish priorities, delegate administrative work, and review completed work.
- Serve as SJC’s primary contact with the EOR supporting team members abroad.
- Gather information about the needs of team members abroad and coordinate solutions with the EOR, leadership, or qualified outside advisers.
- Prepare HR reports and improve HR processes, forms, and documentation.
Required Qualifications
- At least three years of broad HR generalist or management experience.
- Direct experience with employee relations, workplace investigations, performance management, leave administration, benefits, or payroll coordination.
- Working knowledge of U.S. employment requirements and the ability to identify when outside guidance is needed.
- Experience making and communicating reasoned recommendations on sensitive personnel matters.
- Clear and professional written and verbal communication in English.
- Strong organization, follow-through, and attention to detail.
- Experience working with HR, payroll, or performance-management systems.
- Ability to supervise and support an HR Assistant while working effectively with a remote team.
Strongly Preferred
- Hands-on experience supporting employees in California.
- Spanish proficiency sufficient to conduct sensitive employee conversations and communicate HR information.
- Experience supporting a remote and geographically diverse team.
- Experience in a nonprofit, legal-services, immigration-services, or other mission-driven organization.
- Familiarity with Rippling, Lattice, Airtable, or comparable platforms.
Work Arrangement
This position is fully remote (or hybrid if you are local to the Bay Area), with no regular in-office requirement. The employee must work from a U.S. state where SJC is registered and approved to employ staff.
Core availability is generally 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Occasional meetings outside those hours are required to support team members in other time zones.

Pay: $70,500.00 - $85,000.00 per year
