ACADEMIC COACH – McKinley Elementary
Job Description: The Academic Coach works directly with students and staff to provide additional support in reading, writing, and mathematics. The person serving in this capacity oversees the implementation of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies curricula. Assessment support is provided for implementation and data analysis of formative and summative assessments including the Michigan Education Assessment Program.
Qualifications:
1. Must meet the Highly Qualified criteria as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
2. Must hold valid State ofMichigan Teaching Certificate
3. Must possess knowledge of Michigan School Improvement Framework.
4. Must possess knowledge of current state assessments and how they relate to current instruction.
5. Must be knowledgeable of the components and structure of a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
1. Willingness and ability to work cooperatively on a teaching team
2. Experience in the alignment of grade level content standards to curriculum, assessment and instruction
3. Strong knowledge of best practice and research regarding intervention strategies designed to improve achievement in students struggling in reading, writing, and mathematics
4. Knowledge of classroom differentiation
5. Knowledge of what the research has established as effective practices for struggling readers
6. Knowledge of how to connect the use of formative and summative assessments with curriculum, instruction and student achievement
7. Experience in planning and delivering professional development programs to teachers, as well as on-the-job coaching
8. Knowledge of how to use assessment data to monitor learning and to guide instruction
9. Effective written and oral communication skills
10. Knowledge and ability to use various forms of education technology
11. Ability to use effective public relations skills necessary for the successful implementation of new programs
12. Knowledge of board policies and procedures
13. Ability to provide leadership to school based Multi-Tiered System of Support
Essential functions:
1. Provide specialized instruction to struggling readers.
2. Help teachers design rooms that practice small group instruction.
3. Assist teachers in determining who will be targeted for intervention during the school year.
4. Organize staff development for the school based on current needs.
5. Communicate regularly with principals, teachers, and central office administrators.
6. Assist teachers in engaging students in creating meaning by connecting reading and writing for different purposes in all content areas.
7. Evaluate current school intervention efforts considering what the research establishes as effective practices for struggling readers and identify which practices need to be added and/or revised.
8. Analyze assessments and formulate strategies necessary to improve academic achievement relating to student performance.
9. Assist in facilitating Data Dialogue Protocol, Professional Learning Communities, and Instructional Learning Cycles.
