School Security Officer at Academie da Vinci Charter School, K-8
Position Overview:
Academie da Vinci Charter School is seeking a dedicated, responsible, and student-centered School Guardian/Security Officer to help maintain a safe and secure learning environment for our students, employees, families, and visitors.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to build positive relationships with children and adults. Previous experience in law enforcement, security, school safety, and/or a youth-focused setting is preferred.
Mandatory Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a current School Guardian Certificate issued through a Florida sheriff’s office and remain in good standing with all required training, firearm qualification, screening, and recertification requirements; or
Candidates who are not currently certified must successfully complete all required training, background screening, psychological evaluation, drug testing, firearm qualification, and other requirements established by Florida law and the certifying sheriff’s office before applying and being considered to serve as a School Guardian.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as a professional and visible safety presence on campus.
- Build positive, appropriate relationships with students, employees, families, and visitors.
- Conduct regular patrols of school buildings and grounds.
- Monitor entrances, exits, visitor activity, and other designated areas of the campus.
- Identify and promptly report suspicious activity, unauthorized individuals, unsafe conditions, and potential security concerns.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies, disturbances, medical incidents, security breaches, and other safety-related situations.
- Perform Guardian responsibilities in accordance with Florida law, required training, school policies, and established safety procedures.
- Assist administrators with student supervision and the safe management of arrival, dismissal, special events, drills, and emergency situations.
- Support the school’s visitor-management and campus-access procedures.
- Work collaboratively with school administrators, local law enforcement, emergency responders, and other appropriate agencies.
- Assist with the implementation and review of emergency procedures, safety protocols, drills, and threat-management processes.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of safety incidents and other required activities.
- Participate in required annual training, firearm qualification, drug testing, equipment inspections, and other ongoing certification requirements.
- Perform other school-safety duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Current Florida School Guardian certification.
- Previous law-enforcement, military, security, school-safety, or youth-focused experience preferred.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, emergency management, or a related field preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with students, families, employees, visitors, law-enforcement personnel, and emergency responders.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and exercise sound judgment during emergencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to student safety, positive youth development, and maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and prepare accurate written documentation.
- Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the position.
- Willingness to work occasional school events or nontraditional hours, as needed.
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
