Position Summary
The Store Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Banting’s Nursery — leading the team, driving sales, managing inventory, and delivering an exceptional customer experience. This is a hands-on leadership role suited for someone who loves plants, people, and running a tight operation.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
- Oversee all daily store operations including opening/closing procedures, cash handling, and facility maintenance
- Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing sales floor and outdoor growing areas
- Ensure plants and merchandise are properly labeled, priced, and presented
- Monitor and maintain plant health across all departments; direct staff on watering, fertilizing, and pest management schedules
Team Leadership
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise full-time and seasonal staff
- Set clear expectations, provide ongoing coaching, and conduct performance reviews
- Foster a positive, team-oriented work culture with a focus on customer service and product knowledge
Sales & Customer Service
- Engage customers on the floor, answer plant and gardening questions, and assist with product selection
- Resolve customer complaints promptly and professionally
- Drive upsell and add-on opportunities; promote seasonal programs and specials
Inventory & Purchasing
- Monitor stock levels and communicate reorder needs to the buyer
- Receive, inspect, and log incoming plant and hardgoods shipments
- Reduce shrink through attentive plant care, rotation, and markdowns on aging inventory
- Oversee seasonal color program
Financial
- Meet or exceed monthly sales targets
- Manage labor scheduling within budget
- Assist with end-of-month reporting and reconciliation as needed
Qualifications
- 3+ years of retail or nursery management experience preferred
- Working knowledge of landscape plants common to South Louisiana (trees, shrubs, perennials, tropicals, natives)
- Proven ability to lead a team in a fast-paced, seasonal environment
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Comfortable with POS systems and basic computer tasks (email, spreadsheets)
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak seasons (spring/fall)
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors
