Position Overview
The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides specialized instruction and support to students (ages 3–21) who are blind or visually impaired. TVI ensures access to the general education curriculum, teaches compensatory and functional skills, and collaborates with staff and families to implement individualized support. The position includes instructional, diagnostic, and case management responsibilities, in compliance with IDEA and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Student Support
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired, addressing IEP goals.
- Implement goals and objectives as stated in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) through direct and consultative services.
- Modify classroom assignments, materials, and assessments to meet individual visual needs.
- Determine and implement accommodations related to the student’s visual impairment.
- Manage and maintain adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and specialized materials.
- Develop transition plans and Summaries of Performance for students age 14 and older.
Assessment and Evaluation
- Interpret eye reports, vision evaluations, and related medical documentation to guide educational programming.
- Conduct diagnostic assessments as determined by the school service team (e.g., functional vision assessments, learning media assessments).
- Complete diagnostic components as determined by the domains sheet and team discussions.
Collaboration and Consultation
- Partner with health services staff to share information and provide recommendations related to visual impairments.
- Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with parents and guardians.
- Attend and contribute to School Service Team meetings and IEP meetings.
Case Management and Compliance
- Serve as case manager for assigned students, overseeing IEP development and implementation.
- Monitor caseload for annual reviews, reevaluations, and compliance timelines.
- Enter and update data-based screens for evaluations, annual reviews, and progress monitoring.
- Maintain confidential student records in accordance with IDEA, FERPA, and district policy.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or related field.
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with endorsement as a Teacher of Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.
- Knowledge of Unified English Braille (UEB), tactile graphics, and assistive technology for students with visual impairments.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working with students across grade levels (PreK–12).
- Knowledge of assessment tools for visual impairments and functional vision.
