Job Summary
The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to the healthcare team in a primary care office. The Medical Assistant works closely with providers, nurses, and office staff to ensure efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, quality patient care, and a positive patient experience.
Duties
- Greet and room patients in a timely and professional manner.
- Obtain and document accurate vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, height, weight, and oxygen saturation.
- Obtain and document patient medical history, medication lists, allergies, and chief complaints.
- Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
- Assist providers with physical examinations and minor office procedures.
- Perform or assist with point-of-care testing, including urine testing, rapid strep, influenza, COVID-19, pregnancy testing, and glucose testing as applicable.
- Perform and document injections and immunizations within scope of training and applicable regulations.
- Assist with EKGs, specimen collection, wound care, and other routine clinical procedures.
- Collect and properly label laboratory specimens and prepare them for transport.
- Clean and disinfect examination rooms and maintain appropriate infection-control practices.
- Monitor and maintain clinical supplies and notify appropriate staff when supplies need to be reordered.
- Assist with patient education and reinforce provider instructions.
- Identify urgent or abnormal findings and promptly communicate them to the provider or nurse.
- Answer and appropriately route patient phone calls and messages.
- Schedule and coordinate patient appointments.
- Assist with referrals, prior authorizations, laboratory orders, imaging orders, and prescription requests.
- Obtain and update insurance and demographic information.
- Assist with medical records, forms, and other patient documentation.
- Accurately enter patient information and clinical data into the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Communicate with pharmacies, laboratories, specialists, and other healthcare facilities as needed.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and office policies.
Administrative Responsibilities
