The Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs across multiple steel service center locations within their region. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, promotes a strong safety culture, and works closely with operations to reduce workplace incidents involving heavy machinery, cranes, forklifts, and steel processing equipment.
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Embraces the 1 T.E.A.M. culture
- Implement and maintain company-wide safety policies and procedures
- Assist with the development of company-wide safety policies and procedures
- Standardize safety practices across all facilities while allowing for site-specific needs
- Lead hazard identification, risk assessments, and job safety analyses (JSAs)
- Train team members on JSA’s
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other applicable regulations
- Maintain safety records, logs, and reporting (e.g., OSHA 300 logs, hearing conservation, safety orientation, LOTO annual inspections, PIT certifications, BBP annual training, 1st aid/cpr certifications)
- Coordinate and support regulatory inspections and audits
- Assist in conducting safety training for employees, including: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Forklift, crane operation, Personal protective equipment (PPE), Hazard communication
- Assist operations and maintenance with creation and maintenance of individual energy isolation plans
- Track training completion and maintain certifications
- Assist operations managers, plant managers, and supervisors with incident investigation, including root cause analysis and corrective action development
- Work with operations managers to drive completion of corrective actions resulting from EHS events, audits, etc.
- Lead safety committee
- Regularly update screencloud with safety postings
- Communicate findings and lessons learned across all facilities
- Perform regular safety audits and site inspections across multiple locations within region
- Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors; ensure timely corrective action
- Travel between facilities in region 25%-50%
- ~50% time spent on operations floor
- Promote a proactive safety culture through meetings, toolbox talks, and safety committees
- Partner with supervisors and managers to reinforce accountability
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
- Although no direct reports, the position will provide quality and safety focused guidance to organizational leadership and process teams, will serve on committees and special teams and perform other duties as assigned.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA standards and industrial safety practice
- Experience with incident investigation and root cause analysis
- Ability to influence and engage employees at all levels
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Willingness to travel between facilities
- Proficient in basic Microsoft programs and windows-based applications
- Ability to identify complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field preferred.
- 3–5+ years of safety experience in manufacturing, steel, or heavy industrial environments.
- Multi-site experience is a strong plus.
- Steel industry knowledge and experience, a plus
- OSHA 30-hour
- GSP, ASP a plus
- The noise level in the work environment is usually low to medium.
