About Us
We're a small, hands-on custom home building company that takes immense pleasure in creating homebuilding experiences our clients love — from first sketch to final walkthrough. We build exclusively in Michigan’s Western U.P. where stunning Lake Superior shorelines, dense forests, and four genuine seasons make for some of the most rewarding (and challenging!) custom home projects around. If you love great design, you’re adventurous, and you want to see your work become real in a truly spectacular setting, we'd love to talk to you.
We're looking for a talented, enthusiastic Home Designer to join our close-knit team and help turn client visions into build-ready plans.
As a small, innovative company, we don't believe in rigid hierarchies or “that's not my job” thinking. Every employee has a real voice in how we operate, and we're always looking for better ways to design, build, and serve our clients. If you have ideas, we want to hear them!
What You'll Do
- Create complete, build-ready plan sets using Chief Architect. When you’re finished, the plans will be ready for permitting and construction
- Work closely with clients from the very beginning to understand and define the overall style, layout, fit, finish, and function of their home
- Translate client goals and lifestyle needs into thoughtful, livable floor plans — complete with elevations and interior and exterior renderings
- Select materials and finishes that align with each client's vision and budget
- Apply value engineering throughout the design process — finding smart, cost-effective solutions without sacrificing design intent or quality
- Collaborate closely with builders, estimators, and trade partners to ensure plans are accurate, buildable, and aligned with budget targets
- Revise and refine plans based on client feedback, field conditions, and construction realities
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience producing complete, construction-ready plan sets (Chief Architect experience desired, but not required — if you’re enthusiastic and teachable, you’re a good fit!)
- Strong understanding of residential construction methods, building codes, and detailing
- A good eye for design, materials, and finishes — and the ability to guide clients through decisions with confidence
- Experience with value engineering — balancing design, quality, and cost
- Excellent communication skills — comfortable leading client meetings and explaining design and budget tradeoffs in plain language
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects at different stages simultaneously
- Background in architecture, drafting, interior design, or residential construction is a plus
Why Join Us
- Work on a wide variety of exciting custom home projects from concept through completion — no two jobs or clients are ever quite the same
- Direct client interaction — see your designs become real homes, in a place people travel from all over the world to experience
- A genuinely collaborative, close-knit team where you'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with builders, estimators, tradespeople, and suppliers
- A flat, innovative company culture — all employees are expected and encouraged to help shape how we do business, not just execute someone else's playbook
- Real opportunities for growth as our company grows, including taking on more responsibility, mentoring, or expanding into new areas of the business
- Enjoy an unbeatable quality of life: world-class hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling, skiing, incredible sunsets in the summer, and ridiculous amounts of snow in the winter — and you’ll do it all while living with the friendliest people in the world: Yoopers.
