The Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau (BGCP) is one of the fastest-growing youth-serving organizations in Western North Carolina. Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau is seeking a high-potential Site Director Trainee to develop into the Highlands Site Director role in 2027. This unique leadership opportunity is ideal for an energetic and mission-driven professional who is passionate about youth development, has experience working with young people, and is eager to grow into a key leadership position within our organization.
The Highlands Site Director is responsible for the overall leadership and daily operations of the Highlands Club, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, outcome-driven programs and services for youth. The role oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs that support the organization’s priority outcomes of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Leadership. A key responsibility of the position is leading, supervising, and developing a team of approximately 5–10 program staff, fostering a positive culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth. In addition, the Site Director recruits, trains, and supports volunteer staff, manages assigned budgets and resources, and ensures the safe, effective operation of the Club facility. Through strong leadership and community engagement, the Site Director plays a critical role in creating a positive environment where young people can learn, grow, and thrive.
This position will start as a 30-35 hour/week trainee position and move to a full-time director position in January 2027.
KEY ROLES:
Program Development and Implementation
- Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate Highlands Club programs, services, and activities to ensure they meet organizational objectives and member needs and interests.
- Monitor the tracking of all activities, attendance, and participation.
- Work with the programming team to establish and maintain Highlands Club program goals and settings that ensure the health and safety of members.
- Ensure that site staff understand and effectively communicate standards of programming.
- Ensure program areas are safe and that club equipment is maintained and in good working condition.
- Ensure the evaluation of Highlands Club programs on a continual basis, including leading an annual YPQA or equivalent process and ensure that programs/activities respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.
- Monitor Highlands Club program and activity expenditures within the approved budget.
- Create and oversee daily schedules for after school and summer camp programming.
- Monitor safety of members at all times.
- Participate in development and evaluation of safety policies and procedures for the Highlands Club and organization.
Supervision
- Supervise and manage all Highlands Site staff including, all administrative, front desk, management, and program staff.
- Allocate and monitor work assigned to program staff and volunteers, providing ongoing feedback and regular appraisal.
- Identify and support training and development opportunities for assigned staff.
- Participate in recruiting and interviewing potential new staff, and recommend new candidates for hire. Ensure that new hires are properly trained and supported.
- Ensure productive and effective performance by all assigned program staff and volunteers.
- Ensure that all staff, volunteers, and members of the Highlands site understand and follow safety policies and procedures.
Community and Public Relations
- Maintain public relations to increase the visibility of programs, services and activities within the Club and the community.
- Coordinate and schedule activities with Community Partners.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- May oversee special programs and/or events, and/or participate in the implementation of other Club activities as necessary.
- Ability to drive Club vehicles.
- Consult with parents concerning member issues.
- Exercise authority in problems relating to members; utilize guidance and discipline plan.
- Assume other duties as assigned and step into other roles within the Club as needed.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintain close contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, other BGCP Club sites, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel.
External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member families, and others to assist in resolving problems.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Four-year degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of 2 years of work experience in a Boys or Girls Club or similar organization, planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
- Ability to deal effectively with members, including discipline problems.
- Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities.
- Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications.
- Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and motivate staff.
- Working knowledge of budget control and management.
- Demonstrated ability in working with young people, parents, and community leaders.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Must be in moderate physical shape (able to stand for long periods of time, walk, and occasionally run without tiring), may be required to lift up to 55 lbs.
