Purpose and Principle Responsibilities
The Engineering Manager organizes, plans, controls, and leads a skilled team of design/project engineers and designers engaged in the design and development of new and/or modified company products in accordance with customer specifications, established company engineering policies, and government/industry standards. The manager is responsible for the technical aspects of new and legacy products within an assigned segment of business operations. The manager is also responsible for supporting Sales and Marketing efforts, resolving technical problems, and providing technical support to Operations.
Essential Duties - other duties may be assigned
Maintain overall technical ownership/authority and lead the team engaged in the design and development of company products in accordance with customer requirements, specifications, and company policies.
Facilitate the communication and interaction among the team members and those outside the team by advocating and fostering cross-functional teamwork using team-based management and leadership concepts, such as open communication, concurrent engineering, and continuous improvement.
Plan, organize, schedule, and manage activities, and provide technical guidance to the team in the design and development of new products or the improvement of legacy products. This includes various engineering development activities to ensure that the goals, objectives, and deliverables of each program/project are accomplished.
Participate in activities to enhance the engineering department efficiency and productivity with a focus on improving product development speed and overall time to market. This may include conducting technical studies to develop improved and state-of-the-art engineering techniques, processes, policies, and standards in areas such as the design process, documentation, testing, fabrication methodology, and transfer to production.
Responsible for supporting the sale and marketing of company products by analyzing customer requirements, providing special technical analyses, and resolving special customer problems and requirements. In addition, work closely with the product team, Sales and Marketing, and customers to develop innovative, cost effective, producible product design solutions.
Review, analyze, and interpret the technical and administrative requirements contained in requests for proposal (RFP), requests for quotation (RFQ), requests for information (RFI), information for bid (IFB), etc., to prepare material used in the preparation of formal responses.
Write, edit, and review technical proposals in response to a RFP, RFQ, RFI, and IFB. Identify program tasks and prepare associated cost estimates.
Build and lead a dynamic team, and set the pace and example as the leader. Provide employee coaching, mentoring, and training and development to further build and strengthen the culture of the team.
Conduct performance appraisals, and provide recommendations on personnel placement, discipline, and wage increases.

General knowledge of company operations; including scheduling, procurement, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems.
Ability to understand, track, drill-down, and question activities and issues, and make sound business decisions based upon the data gathered.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
General office environment with office equipment usage. Requires usage of computer and computer software. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Answers telephone calls and occasionally bends over, reaches and pushes and pulls file drawers. Moves within the office and factory to collect, deliver, and copy documents. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
1. The Engineering Manager works the majority of the day in a climate controlled office environment, with the exception of performing work in the warehouse, manufacturing areas, at external test laboratories, etc. which are subject to changes in temperature and/or noise.
2. The Engineering Manager role is primarily a sedentary office position. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the position may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Finger/hand dexterity is required to operate computers and product.
3. Travel is required. May be required to carry land luggage (60-lb. weight) for extended distances (1/2 mile).
