Commercial Plan Examiner for an AI Tech Startup (hybrid/remote-friendly)

Role Summary As a Commercial Plan Examiner you will review commercial building plans for code compliance, provide clear plan review comments, and help train our AI models by annotating plans and clarifying code interpretations. You’ll work closely with engineers, product managers, and data scientists to translate practical code expertise into scalable review workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct technical plan reviews of commercial architectural, structural, and MEP documents for compliance with applicable building codes, fire/life-safety, and accessibility standards.
Produce clear, concise written review comments and deficiency lists suitable for permitting authorities and design teams.
Annotate plans and decision rationales to support model training and QA of AI-assisted review tools.
Consult with architects, engineers, and clients to resolve code issues and propose compliant solutions or alternatives.
Participate in cross-functional design reviews, user testing, and product feedback cycles.
Stay current on relevant codes (IBC, IFC, NFPA, accessibility standards) and assist in developing internal code interpretation guidance.
Contribute to process improvements to increase review speed and consistency.
Required Qualifications
3+ years experience performing commercial plan reviews, or equivalent experience as a design professional with substantial code compliance work.
Strong working knowledge of commercial building codes, means of egress, fire-resistance and life-safety systems, and accessibility requirements.
Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail.
Comfortable annotating documents and explaining code rationale to technical and non-technical audiences.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Preferred
ICC plan examiner certification(s) (preferred but not required).
Experience with permit/plan review software and PDF markup tools (Bluebeam, PlanGrid, etc.).
Prior exposure to software or data annotation workflows; interest in AI applications for permitting.
Professional licensure (Architect, PE) or fire plans examiner experience a plus.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of local building codes, zoning regulations, and construction regulations.
- Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and architectural plans.
- Excellent report writing skills with the ability to prepare clear documentation for regulatory reporting purposes.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite for report preparation, data management, and communication.
- Experience working within government agencies or in roles involving public permitting or environmental compliance is highly desirable.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail for managing multiple reviews simultaneously while adhering to deadlines.
