Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced Senior Geo-Technician to support one of our valued mining clients. This senior role is hands-on, field-oriented, and essential to ensuring high-quality geological data collection. The Senior Geo-Technician will take the lead in handling drill core and RC samples, maintaining data integrity, mentoring junior technicians, and ensuring safety and efficiency in daily operations. This position requires strong technical skills, physical endurance, and a commitment to safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all safety procedures are followed and take a proactive role in identifying hazards and improving field safety practice
- Support execution of drilling programs to include:
- Collect samples daily for laboratory shipment ensuring all sample quality standards, blanks, and duplicates are included
- Prepare cutsheets, RC sample bags and chip trays
- Cut core and prepare for laboratory shipment
- Transport and organize drill core, and sonic samples
- Proficient in sampling techniques and understanding of importance of correct procedures
- Data Collection:
- Photograph chip trays and core and other samples as required
- Assist with core orientation, footage marking, collect specific gravity measurements, point load tests, and document core recovery (RQD)
- Collect collar locations using GPS units and enter into database
- Collect hyperspectral or pXRF data
- General:
- Aids Geologists in drafting SOPs for tasks performed by exploration technicians
- Manages sample storage and inventory
- Manages core shed supply inventory and communicate supply needs to project leads
- Demonstrated ability to safely travel around the work site (whether the active mine site or exploration projects) and locate drill sites to perform needed tasks.
- Oversee and train other geotechs and ensure all procedures are being followed as established
- Conduct special projects as assigned
Requirements
- Associate’s degree, technical certificate, or coursework in geology, earth science or related field preferred but not required.
- 2–4+ years of experience as a geo-technician or in a similar core handling/sampling role.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products, especially excel. Experience with Mx Deposit a plus, Experience using GPS units.
- Experience or ability to learn to safely operate a forklift, skidsteer or telehandler.
- Proven experience with core cutting, sampling, RQD measurements, and RC chip handling.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs and work on uneven terrain in variable weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently, lead small teams, and collaborate effectively with geologists and drill crews.
- Preferred experience with reading maps, using GPS, and driving 4x4 vehicles in off-road environments.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Surface MSHA Metal/Non-Metal certification required (or ability to obtain prior to start).
