Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Transportation Manager to lead terminal operations, oversee high-volume driver and dock teams, and optimize regional transportation operations through effective use of a Transportation Management System (TMS).
The ideal candidate will have strong people-leadership skills, a safety-focused mindset, hands-on terminal experience, and the ability to drive operational performance in a fast-paced transportation environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily terminal operations, including dispatch, yard, dock, loading, and unloading activities.
- Lead, coach, schedule, recruit, onboard, and develop drivers, dispatchers, dockworkers, and supervisors.
- Utilize a Transportation Management System (TMS) to plan and assign routes, optimize load consolidation, monitor carrier performance, and control transportation costs.
- Monitor driver performance and ensure compliance with DOT/FMCSA regulations, HOS requirements, ELDs, and company safety policies.
- Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs), including:
- On-time delivery (OTD)
- Dwell time
- Cost per mile
- Miles per stop
- Detention
- Claims
- Equipment utilization
- Prepare daily and weekly operational reports and implement corrective actions to improve performance.
- Coordinate with customers to resolve service issues and exceptions.
- Support sales and operations teams with capacity planning and resource allocation.
- Manage relationships with vendors, owner-operators, third-party carriers, and subcontracted service providers.
- Monitor terminal P&L inputs, including labor, fuel, equipment, detention, and dwell costs.
- Identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve service levels.
- Ensure proper maintenance of terminal equipment and compliance with facility security, environmental, and OSHA requirements.
- Lead incident investigations, conduct root-cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across terminal and transportation operations.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of transportation or terminal management experience in a 3PL, brokerage, carrier, or similar transportation environment.
- Proven experience managing high-volume transportation operations and driver teams.
- Hands-on experience with terminal operations, including yard management, dock planning, and load sequencing.
- Proficiency with one or more TMS platforms, such as Transplace, MercuryGate, TMW, Oracle Transportation, Descartes, or equivalent.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience scheduling, coaching, developing, and scaling teams; experience managing 50+ employees preferred.
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations, HOS, driver logs, ELDs, and transportation safety practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to use KPIs to improve operational performance.
- Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
- Ability to effectively manage and de-escalate service issues.
- Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with intermodal, drayage, regional LTL, or full-truckload (FT) operations.
- Experience working in the Long Beach/Carson port and transportation environment.
- Familiarity with California transportation and regulatory requirements.
- Experience managing transportation operations in a high-volume, time-sensitive environment.
