Since 1959, USC American Language Institute (ALI) provides English language instruction, assessment and academic support services for international students and scholars at the University of Southern California (USC). ALI offers English language courses that help undergraduate, graduate, and professional students develop the academic communication skills needed for success at the university. In addition to offering English language instruction, the ALI administers the International Student English (ISE) Examination to assess English proficiency and determine appropriate English language support. ALI also administers the International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Exam and provides specialized instruction to help international teaching assistants meet USC's English language proficiency requirements for teaching.
ALI invites applications for Part-Time Lecturer positions for the Fall 2026 semester. Successful candidates will teach English language courses that develop the academic communication skills required for success in undergraduate and graduate study at USC. ALI faculty teach multilingual students representing a broad range of countries, languages, academic disciplines, and educational backgrounds.
Qualifications
Required
Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a closely related field
Demonstrated excellence in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English as a Second Language (ESL), or related courses at the university level
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff
Preferred
Experience teaching multilingual students preparing for or pursuing undergraduate or graduate study
Experience with curriculum development, language assessment, or placement testing
Evidence of ongoing professional engagement through scholarship, conference presentations, publications, or leadership in professional organizations
Experience integrating instructional technologies into language instruction
Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English
Experience living, working, or studying outside of the United States
Responsibilities
Part-time lecturers are expected to:
Teach assigned ALI courses.
Deliver high-quality, student-centered instruction that supports multilingual learners in achieving course and program learning outcomes.
Assess student learning using established program outcomes and assessment practices.
Maintain accurate course records and submit grades in accordance with university policies.
Collaborate with colleagues to support curriculum development, assessment, and continuous program improvement.
Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, and other program initiatives, as appropriate.
Appointment
Appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis and are contingent upon programmatic need and enrollment.

Salary is $9,000 per course.
