The Directing Attorney for Access to Justice supports a legal non-profit organization in Southern California in leading key access-to-justice programs and special initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational standards, compliance requirements, and community needs. This is a full-time, exempt position serving as the primary decision-maker for these programs, collaborates closely with leadership, and reports to the Director of Legal Services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for access-to-justice programs, ensuring services align with organizational goals, compliance requirements, and community needs.
- Supervise, mentor, and support supervising attorneys and teams, including regular performance coaching, leadership development, and staff engagement.
- Establish and monitor policies, practices, and quality standards to ensure professional, ethical, and effective service delivery.
- Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional departments to support program planning, funding, compliance, operations, financial stewardship, and talent management.
- Represent the organization with courts, funders, community partners, bar associations, and government stakeholders while advancing strategic initiatives that expand access to justice.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience: Juris Doctor and active California Bar membership in good standing, with at least 8 years of legal experience and 3 years of leadership, supervision, and team development experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of California and federal legal principles, court procedures, legal research, compliance requirements, and the substantive areas of law relevant to assigned programs.
- Proven leadership, management, and program development skills, with the ability to supervise teams, implement policies, and ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage effectively with staff, courts, bar associations, community partners, government agencies, and diverse client communities.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, exercise sound judgment, solve complex problems, maintain compliance with grant requirements, and advance social justice and equity-focused initiatives.
- Ability to travel throughout the service area to represent the organization and engage with clients, courts, and community partners.
