Field Engineer – Long-Span Suspension Bridge Retrofit Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Field Engineer to support retrofit and rehabilitation work on a long-span suspension bridge in Marin, California. This is a field-intensive position requiring daily bridge walks, hands-on measurements, construction coordination, and detailed documentation in an active work environment.
The successful candidate will have at least five years of civil engineering experience, including retrofit or rehabilitation projects, field coordination, inspection work, and preparation of Requests for Information (RFIs). Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and the ability to work effectively with contractors, inspectors, designers, union tradespeople, and project management personnel are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily bridge walks while carrying field and measurement equipment.
- Take, verify, document, and report field measurements used to support retrofit design and construction.
- Inspect existing conditions and active construction work for conformance with project drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and applicable standards.
- Identify field conflicts, discrepancies, constructability concerns, and changed conditions.
- Prepare clear, technically accurate RFIs with supporting measurements, photographs, sketches, and drawing references.
- Coordinate field activities with contractors, subcontractors, inspectors, surveyors, designers, and project management staff.
- Support layout verification, retrofit installation, and resolution of field issues.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, inspection records, photographs, measurement logs, and other project documentation.
- Review drawings, specifications, shop drawings, submittals, and work plans relevant to assigned activities.
- Participate in coordination meetings, site walks, and safety briefings.
- Promptly communicate schedule, quality, safety, and constructability concerns to project leadership.
- Follow all project-specific safety procedures and requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of five years of civil engineering experience.
- Experience with structural retrofit, rehabilitation, repair, or heavy civil construction projects.
- Previous construction inspection or structural inspection experience.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating work in an active field environment.
- Experience preparing and tracking RFIs and documenting field conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret civil and structural drawings, specifications, and shop drawings.
- Ability to take precise field measurements and produce clear sketches and written documentation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with standard documentation and collaboration software.
- Ability to work independently in the field while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary project team.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, as required for the project location.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on long-span bridges, suspension bridges, cable-supported structures, or major bridge rehabilitation projects.
- Experience coordinating and working directly with union ironworkers in an active construction environment.
- Familiarity with structural steel, bolted and welded connections, concrete repairs, coatings, access systems, or related bridge-retrofit work.
- Experience working with transportation agencies or on publicly funded infrastructure projects.
- Engineer-in-Training certification or Professional Engineer licensure.
- OSHA 10- or OSHA 30-hour construction safety training.
- Fall-protection, scaffold-access, aerial-lift, or confined-space training, as applicable.
Physical and Work-Environment Requirements
This position requires extensive work in an active bridge and construction environment. The employee must be able to:
- Walk substantial distances across the bridge daily, including uneven, narrow, inclined, or elevated work surfaces.
- Carry and use field equipment, measurement tools, and required personal protective equipment.
- Wear a respirator and other project-required PPE for extended periods.
- Successfully complete required medical clearance, respirator fit testing, and safety training.
- Work at heights and near traffic, construction equipment, noise, dust, fumes, vibration, and moving machinery.
- Climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and temporary access systems, as required.
- Bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and remain standing or walking for extended periods.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and temperatures.
- Work occasional nights, weekends, or extended shifts when required by project activities.
