JOB The City of Roanoke Engineering Division is seeking an Engineering Technician II to perform complex technical
support work related to design, construction and inspection of engineering improvement projects. Job
responsibilities include but are not limited to providing construction management services, review of contractor
pay requests and change order reviews, and acting as owner's representative for capital projects. The successful
candidate will also perform field surveying and base map preparation, preliminary design studies and
engineering calculations and utilize computer aided systems (i.e. AutoCAD, GIS, etc.) to support the development
of plans. projects and programs. Associate's degree or equivalent from two year college or technical school with
major work in civil engineering technology and five to ten years related experience and/or training in engineering
support work and inspection, computer aided drafting and design work in civil engineering software; or
equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUMMARY
Performs complex technical support work related to design, construction and inspection of engineering
improvement projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provides construction management services, review of contractor pay requests and change order reviews, and
acts as owner's representative for capital projects
Conducts field inspections and prepares daily reports for construction projects to insure compliance to approved
plans
Provides field engineering services to resolve issues typically outside the scope of the original project
Schedules pre-application meetings for Right of Way Excavation Permit program; reviews permit applications;
issues and tracks permits: performs database maintenance; schedules and performs inspections; prepares
follow-up reports; assists in the coordination of right of way activities; educates both contractors and citizens in
the permit process
Performs field surveying and base map preparation, preliminary design studies and engineering calculations;
completes construction drawings and specifications: inspects and rates drainage issues; inspects a wide variety
of citizen complaints
Utilizes computer aided systems (i.e. AutoCAD, GIS, etc.) to support the development of plans, projects and
programs
Coordinates and runs surveys and prepares technical reports from data received
Prepares specifications and bid documents for engineer related projects
Performs engineering studies and field investigations
May perform oversight management duties in relation to assigned Parking Garage (s)
May assist with the review and issuance of assembly, parade, and dumpster permits
May coordinate traffic control and information sign installation, replacement, maintenance, and inventory with
the sign shop
Prepares reports and develops visual materials
Trains other staff in daily duties and new techniques.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises engineering technicians and inspectors, as assigned, in the performance of the duties described
above.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret, journals, reports, documents, and maps. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints orally and in writing. Ability to keep detailed and accurate inspection reports. Ability to communicate effectively with management, public groups or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. Ability to apply engineering computations for hydrology, hydraulics, statics, dynamics, geotechnical applications, thermodynamics, and transportation. Ability to apply surveying computations for the preparation of boundary surveys and plats. Ability to perform detailed cost estimates for various types of construction projects.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply engineering judgment and practices to solve problems where limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
