We are seeking a dependable and experienced First Cook to join our culinary team in our assisted living community. The First Cook is responsible for preparing nutritious, high-quality meals according to established menus and standardized recipes while ensuring all food is prepared safely and served on time. This role is essential in providing residents with enjoyable meals that meet dietary requirements and support their overall well-being.
The ideal candidate is organized, team-oriented, and committed to maintaining high standards of food quality, sanitation, and resident satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook meals according to established menus, standardized recipes, and production schedules.
- Ensure meals are prepared with consistency, proper portion sizes, and attractive presentation.
- Follow all therapeutic diet guidelines and accommodate modified textures and special dietary requirements as directed.
- Prepare food using a variety of cooking techniques, including baking, roasting, grilling, braising, steaming, sautéing, and poaching.
- Maintain compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and infection control standards.
- Monitor food temperatures and ensure proper storage, labeling, and rotation of food products (FIFO).
- Assist with food preparation for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special events as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen and work area.
- Assist with inventory, stocking, and proper use of kitchen supplies while minimizing waste.
- Work collaboratively with the Dietary Manager and kitchen staff to ensure meals are served on schedule.
- Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely and report maintenance concerns promptly.
- Follow all company policies and state and local health department regulations.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a cook in an assisted living facility, nursing home, healthcare, senior living, hospital, or institutional food service setting preferred.
- Experience preparing meals for large groups using standardized recipes.
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and safe food handling practices.
- Understanding of therapeutic diets, texture-modified diets, and dietary restrictions is preferred.
- Strong knife skills and proficiency with commercial kitchen equipment.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality and consistency.
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Food Handler's Card or ServSafe Certification preferred (or ability to obtain as required).
Pay: $19.50 - $20.50 per hour
