Position Summary
The Sheet Metal Helper supports experienced sheet metal mechanics and foremen with the installation of commercial HVAC duct systems and accessories. This position is intended for a reliable employee who wants to build a long-term sheet metal career through supervised, hands-on field experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Load, unload, stage, sort, and protect duct sections, fittings, hangers, accessories, tools, and equipment.
· Assist with installing rectangular, round, and spiral ductwork; fittings; hangers; supports; dampers; access doors; grilles; louvers; and equipment connections.
· Measure, mark, drill, cut, seal, fasten, and assemble duct components under direction.
· Assist with S-slip and drive connections, flanged systems, sealants, gasketing, insulation protection, and duct reinforcement as assigned.
· Support installation around RTUs, AHUs, fans, VAV boxes, curbs, sleeves, and other commercial HVAC equipment.
· Use snips, drills, impacts, saws, grinders, levels, lasers, lifts, and material-handling equipment safely when trained and authorized.
· Maintain clean work areas and help protect completed ductwork from damage and contamination.
· Follow layout marks, drawings, measurements, foreman instructions, and installation sequences.
· Report damaged material, field conflicts, missing parts, and unsafe conditions promptly.
Minimum Qualifications
· At least six months of paid, hands-on construction or mechanical-trade field experience; sheet metal or duct-installation experience is strongly preferred.
· Ability to read a tape measure accurately and understand basic fractions.
· Basic familiarity with hand tools, power tools, ladders, and construction-site safety.
· Dependable attendance, reliable transportation, and ability to report to changing project locations.
· Ability to follow direction, work from elevations, and coordinate with a crew.
· High school diploma or GED preferred, or equivalent work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
· Commercial duct-installation experience.
· OSHA 10, NCCER Core, registered-apprenticeship participation, or sheet metal technical training.
· Experience with aerial lifts, duct lifts, shop fabrication, or mechanical drawings.
Physical and Work Requirements
· Lift and carry up to 50 pounds and assist with heavier material using proper equipment and team-lifting practices.
· Work from ladders, lifts, rooftops, mechanical rooms, construction areas, and other elevated or restricted locations.
· Stand, bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work with tools for extended periods.
· Work in indoor and outdoor environments with changing temperatures, noise, dust, and active construction conditions.
· Work overtime, weekends, or adjusted schedules when project requirements call for it.

· Learns duct components, connection methods, sealing requirements, and installation standards.
· Progresses toward completing basic duct-installation tasks with less supervision.
