Leadership Academy of Nevada (LANV) is seeking a teacher (who we refer to as a “mentor”) for our live, online high school science classes.

Job Purpose
The Mentor is responsible for modeling principled leadership and a love of learning in the virtual classroom while maintaining a safe and respectful classroom environment. He/she will provide engaging online instruction in their specified subject area, utilizing a classical approach to lectures, demonstrations, and discussion. He/she will also encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use relevant information to adjust teaching strategies that will help each student fulfill their academic potential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning (Biology, Geoscience, Chemistry)
- Manage student behavior in the virtual classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures
- Maintain Canvas courses that adhere to school guidelines and best practices
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
- Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction
- Collaborate with other mentors to provide cross-curricular instruction as needed
- Develop, administer, and grade assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests that are in accordance with established school procedures
- Provide meaningful, timely, and appropriate feedback on student work
- Maintain accurate and complete records of student attendance, progress, and development
- Monitor student grades, performance, and development
- Adapt learning activities based on student performance
- Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents/guardians regarding student progress and student needs
- Encourage parent/guardian involvement in the students’ educational journey
- Build and maintain positive relationships with students and families through ongoing communication
- Promptly return phone calls, emails, and other requests from both internal (colleagues, administration, etc.) and external (students, parents/guardians, etc.) customers
- Attend Office Hours and Study Hall sessions on a weekly basis in order to ensure student and family support
- Attend regular meetings, including synchros, Friday Huddles, and Professional Development meetings
- Attend conferences and workshops in order to further advance professional development as needed
- Support monthly student activities and other school activities as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Education: BS/BA degree in teaching from an accredited college or university is required for mentors teaching core subjects.
- Nevada teacher license in the appropriate subject area/grade level
- Strong technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Google G-Suite, and Canvas learning management platform.
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
- Self-starter with the ability to manage a variety of projects simultaneously with attention to detail.
- Ability to recognize the sensitive nature of issues and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to interpret and accurately apply written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work independently and meet predetermined deadlines.
- Ability to relate to individuals from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to pass a criminal history and background check in accordance with NRS 388A.515.
Expected Hours of Work
This position requires approximately 40 hours of work per week. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some evenings and weekends may be required. Alternative schedules may be accommodated as outlined in the Employee Handbook. This is a 10-month per year position, which begins on or about August 1 and ends on or about June 1 each year. However, mentors are paid in 24 equal installments throughout the fiscal year.
