BUSINESS JOURNAL RESEARCH JOURNALIST JOB DESCRIPTION
The Los Angeles Business Journal and the Inside the Valley, the leading source of news and information for the business community, is seeking an enterprising and organized Research Journalist.
The Research Journalist, through careful analysis and coverage of the region’s businesses across various industries, will deliver the weekly “The List” product across all our print and digital properties. In this role, the Research Journalist will study industry trends, analyze data, and communicate directly with companies and executives to create “The List” as well as our special edition “Book of Lists.” They will also contribute additional editorial content, such as data pages with infographics and analytical news stories accompanying the lists, and collaborate with the other reporters on the team to improve coverage of their beats.
The person in this role will report to the Editor-in-Chief and will provide coverage with context. The Research Journalist is ideally a self-driving, deadline- and detail-oriented person enthusiastic about print and digital media.
The Los Angeles Business Journal is a weekly print publication with a 40-year history of covering the dynamic business community in L.A. County. Inside the Valley an award-winning B2B media company that has been serving the San Fernando Valley Community of Business for more than 25 years. The organizations publish content from the print edition as well as additional original content online, in daily e-newsletters and on social media.
Responsibilities:
· Research and analyze data to create the weekly “The List” ranking of various businesses and organizations.
· Use this information to develop and produce additional editorial pieces such as data pages or analytical news stories.
· Develop a deep knowledge of people, companies and business trends across the region and assist the other reporters in following this information. You should be adept at identifying and extrapolating trends in the various business sectors that we cover and developing ideas on how to cover and present them. You should also work with the reporting team on complementing their stories and help them develop story ideas for their features, profiles and special reports.
· Build and maintain a network of sources and relationships with key players across the business community.
Requirements:
· Must be adept at research and analysis and possess excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
· Bachelor’s degree or higher.
