Position Overview
C. & E. Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School seeks a passionate, skilled, and student-centered Middle School English & Writing Teacher to teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English Language Arts, including dedicated writing instruction, in both honors and regular sections. The average class size is approximately 20 students.
The ideal candidate will cultivate strong readers, thoughtful writers, and confident communicators while nurturing students within a Christian Armenian educational environment that values academic excellence, character development, and cultural identity.
Primary Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
- Teach middle school English Language Arts and Writing across grades 6–8, including:
- Literature analysis (novels, short stories, poetry, informational texts)
- Academic, narrative, and argumentative writing
- Grammar, vocabulary, and language conventions
- Research, speaking, and presentation skills
- Provide differentiated instruction for both honors and regular-level learners, ensuring appropriate rigor, scaffolding, and enrichment.
- Design standards-aligned, inquiry-based lessons that strengthen:
- Close reading and textual evidence
- Critical thinking and discussion
- Writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing
- Integrate instructional technology and digital platforms, including Google Classroom, to organize coursework, provide feedback, and support blended learning.
- Use formative and summative assessments, writing rubrics, and data analysis to guide instruction and monitor student growth.
- Support schoolwide literacy development and data-informed instructional practices, including review of assessment results where applicable.
Student Development & Classroom Culture
- Establish a structured, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment grounded in Christian values.
- Foster student voice, creativity, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity.
- Encourage appreciation for Armenian heritage, global literature, and ethical communication.
- Maintain clear expectations, consistent routines, and positive behavior supports.
Collaboration & Professional Engagement
- Collaborate with grade-level colleagues, administration, and specialists to support student achievement and writing development across disciplines.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning, and school events.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and guardians regarding academic progress and writing growth.
- Contribute to school programs, publications, performances, and community events as appropriate.
QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, Writing, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and engage middle school students in reading and writing.
- Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Google Classroom and educational technology for instruction, feedback, and assessment.
- Commitment to the mission, values, and Christian Armenian identity of Merdinian School.
Preferred
- Valid teaching credential (California or equivalent).
- Prior middle school English/ELA teaching experience, including honors-level instruction.
- Experience with standards-based curriculum, differentiation, writing instruction, and data-informed teaching.
- Familiarity with student assessment systems and digital learning environments.
