Position: Program Instructor (Part-time)
Positions/Service Areas:
- 2 instructors to serve primarily Los Angeles (with occasional travel beyond L.A.)
- 1 instructor to serve primarily Santa Ana (with occasional travel beyond Orange County)
Reports to: School Programs and Partnerships Senior Manager
Employment Type: Part-time (Non-Exempt) at 16 hours max per week (w/opportunity to increase if program funding is available)

Position Summary
Grades of Green is seeking a passionate and collaborative Programs Instructor to help inspire and activate the next generation of environmental leaders. Working alongside a supportive and mission-driven team, this role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact in schools and communities by engaging K-12 students, educators, and community partners in meaningful environmental action.
The staff member will support the planning and implementation of hands-on educational programs such as after school sessions, workshops, assemblies, school events, and community initiatives across Los Angeles and surrounding communities. From helping schools build gardens, reduce waste and strengthen campus sustainability efforts to building environmental and climate literacy and supporting student-led solutions, this position plays an important role in creating lasting change. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, enjoys working with youth, and is excited to contribute to a collaborative team dedicated to building healthier, more resilient communities.
Key Responsibilities (With Percentages)
1. Program Delivery & Student Engagement (60%)
- Support the delivery of Grades of Green programs, workshops, school events, and community engagement activities for K-12 students, educators, and partners.
- Facilitate hands-on learning experiences and student leadership opportunities using established Grades of Green curriculum, resources, and program models.
- Assist with preparing materials, event logistics, and other activities that contribute to high-quality program implementation.
2. School & Community Partnership Support (25%)
- Build positive, professional relationships with teachers, students, volunteers, and community partners while supporting successful program implementation.
- Provide responsive support to participating schools and assist with communications, scheduling, and coordination as assigned.
- Represent Grades of Green professionally at schools, meetings, and community events.
3. Program Operations & Team Support (15%)
- Maintain accurate program records, collect participation and impact data, and assist with administrative and reporting needs.
- Travel regularly to schools and program sites throughout Los Angeles and surrounding communities.
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and other duties that support the successful implementation and continuous improvement of Grades of Green programs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Experience working with K-12 students in historically marginalized communities
- Access to reliable transportation
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to be resourceful and resilient in unplanned situations
- Clear, friendly, and professional communication
- Proficiency in Google Workspace; Training will provided for other relevant software
- Residing in the greater Los Angeles area strongly preferred due to in-person commitments
- Ability to lift 30 lbs (a bag of soil!)
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental studies, sustainability, or a related field preferred.
- Experience working with K-12 students, youth programs, camps, tutoring, education, or community-based organizations.
- Passion for environmental education and a commitment to Grades of Green’s mission of inspiring and activating students to lead environmental change.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and adapt in a dynamic environment.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace; willingness to learn additional software and systems.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to travel up to 4 days per week to schools and program sites throughout Los Angeles and surrounding communities.
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check and any school district clearance requirements necessary to work with minors.
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- Experience working in diverse school or community settings.
- Residence within the greater Los Angeles area.
Total Compensation
- Compensation: $19.00 per hour (non-exempt) plus mileage reimbursement at federally approved rate and organization policies
- Schedule: Up to 16 hours per week TBD with your supervisor - typically 4 days per week, 4 hours per day
- Professional Growth: Ongoing training, mentorship, and opportunities to develop skills in environmental education, youth engagement, and nonprofit programming.
