About the Position
Penz Auto Group is looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Collision Center Painter to join our team at GMC of Rochester Collision Center.
The Painter is responsible for preparing, refinishing, and painting vehicles following OEM procedures and Penz Auto Group's quality standards. The ideal candidate takes pride in their craftsmanship, understands the importance of proper preparation and color matching, and can consistently produce a high-quality finish while maintaining an efficient production pace.

What You'll Do
Vehicle Preparation & Refinishing
- Prepare vehicles and panels for paint, including sanding, masking, priming, sealing, and surface preparation.
- Perform bodywork inspection prior to painting and communicate any concerns or additional preparation needed.
- Mix and match paint colors using computerized color-matching systems.
- Blend colors accurately to achieve proper color match and OEM-quality results.
- Apply basecoat, clearcoat, primers, sealers, and other refinishing materials according to manufacturer and OEM specifications.
- Properly cure, dry, sand, buff, and finish painted surfaces.
- Identify and correct imperfections such as runs, sags, fisheyes, dirt, orange peel, and color mismatches.
- Inspect completed work to ensure it meets Penz Auto Group and manufacturer quality standards.
Quality & Production
- Produce consistent, high-quality finishes while maintaining an efficient workflow.
- Minimize rework through proper preparation, paint application, and quality inspection.
- Meet established production and cycle-time expectations.
- Communicate repair progress and potential delays with the Body Shop Manager and production team.
- Work closely with body technicians, estimators, parts personnel, and other painters to keep vehicles moving efficiently through the repair process.
Equipment & Shop Responsibilities
- Maintain spray guns, sanders, paint equipment, and other personal tools in good working condition.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe paint booth and work area.
- Properly clean and maintain paint equipment following manufacturer recommendations.
- Assist with general shop organization and cleanup as needed.
- Help other team members during periods of high production volume.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA, OEM, manufacturer, and Penz Auto Group safety procedures.
- Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Follow proper procedures for handling, storing, labeling, and disposing of paint and refinishing materials.
- Maintain proper ventilation and safe operating conditions in the paint booth and surrounding work areas.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Previous automotive collision repair/refinishing experience.
- Strong knowledge of automotive paint preparation and application.
- Ability to accurately color match and blend paint.
- Ability to work efficiently while maintaining high-quality workmanship.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Positive attitude, dependable work ethic, and personal accountability.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely lift, bend, squat, kneel, reach, and work around vehicles for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of collision or automotive refinishing experience.
- Experience with computerized paint-matching systems.
- I-CAR, ASE, or manufacturer-specific training/certifications.
- Experience working with OEM repair and refinishing procedures.
- Experience in a high-volume collision repair environment.
Tools & Equipment
Employees are expected to have the appropriate personal hand tools and paint guns necessary to perform their job effectively. Large shop equipment and facility equipment are provided by Penz Auto Group.
Physical Requirements
The position requires the ability to:
- Stand for extended periods of time.
- Frequently bend, squat, kneel, reach, and work in various positions around vehicles.
- Lift and move parts and materials weighing 50+ pounds.
- Work around paint materials, spray booths, automotive equipment, and typical body shop noise.
- Safely wear required PPE and respiratory protection when applicable.

Pay Range: $22.00–$35.00 per hour, based on experience and skill level.
