Material Handling Manager (Power Plant & Heavy-Duty Turbine Projects)
Position Summary
The Material Handling Manager is responsible for overseeing all material handling, storage, preservation, inspection, and logistics activities associated with large-scale Power Plant construction, commissioning, and maintenance projects, with a particular focus on Heavy-Duty Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Generators, and associated balance-of-plant equipment. The role ensures that all project materials and critical turbine components are received, stored, preserved, inspected, and maintained in accordance with project requirements, OEM standards, and industry best practices.
Extensive experience supporting Power Plant projects and handling Heavy-Duty Turbine equipment is essential. The successful candidate will provide oversight of material preservation activities from equipment delivery through commissioning and final handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete all required pre-mobilization activities and site-specific training requirements.
- Review and acknowledge all onboarding and project mobilization documentation.
- Complete training related to material handling, storage, and preservation of critical Power Plant equipment.
- Become thoroughly familiar with project contracts, division of responsibilities (DOR), and applicable Incoterms.
- Ensure Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors maintain an approved Material Accountability System (MAS).
- Verify that all applicable storage and preservation guidelines have been formally distributed and communicated to site teams.
- Recommend and implement equipment and processes required for preservation and re-preservation activities of critical Power Plant assets, including Heavy-Duty Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Generators, and auxiliary systems.
- Establish escalation procedures and contingency plans to mitigate project delays and material-related risks.
Material Management & Preservation
- Monitor and ensure proper storage, handling, and preservation of all Power Plant equipment throughout the project lifecycle.
- Oversee preservation activities for Heavy-Duty Turbines, generators, control systems, electrical equipment, and balance-of-plant components.
- Ensure storage and preservation activities comply with OEM recommendations, O&M manuals, and site procedures.
- Update and maintain all inspection records within the applicable warehouse and material management systems.
- Review, approve, and release inspections according to established project requirements and inspection milestones.
- Collect preservation and maintenance records from field personnel and contractors and transfer documentation through formal turnover processes.
- Ensure preservation logs are developed, maintained, and regularly updated in accordance with equipment-specific requirements.
- Conduct routine audits to confirm preservation standards are being maintained for all critical Power Plant and Heavy-Duty Turbine equipment.
- Perform comprehensive handovers of all material management and preservation activities prior to demobilization.
Storage & Laydown Area Management
- Maintaining clean, organized, and safe storage environments.
- Preventing accumulation of waste, packaging materials, debris, and contaminants.
- Ensuring scrap and packaging materials are properly segregated and disposed of through approved waste streams.
- Keeping laydown areas free from vegetation, standing water, and environmental conditions that may contribute to deterioration of critical equipment.
- Implementing pest control measures to prevent rodents, insects, and other contaminants from damaging stored materials.
- Establishing designated quarantine areas for damaged, non-conforming, or scrap materials.
- Verifying that fire protection systems appropriate to warehouse operations and stored equipment are installed, maintained, and fully operational.
- Conducting monthly inspections to verify compliance with storage and preservation requirements for Power Plant and Heavy-Duty Turbine components.
Receiving, Inspection & Quality Control
- Participate in and oversee unloading operations for all incoming project materials.
- Supervise receiving inspections for major equipment deliveries, including Heavy-Duty Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines, Generators, Transformers, and Power Plant auxiliary equipment.
- Ensure all received materials undergo comprehensive inspection in accordance with project procedures.
- Coordinate and document both closed-box and open-box inspections.
- Verify that all discrepancies, damage reports, and non-conformances are immediately identified, documented, and reported.
- Ensure all inspections and observations are formally recorded within seven (7) days following receipt of materials.
- Collaborate closely with quality, construction, commissioning, and logistics teams to maintain full material traceability throughout the project.
Preferred Experience & Qualifications
- Extensive experience as a Material Handling Manager, Materials Coordinator, Warehouse Manager, or Site Logistics Manager on large-scale Power Plant projects.
- Proven experience supporting the installation, preservation, storage, and commissioning of Heavy-Duty Gas Turbines and Steam Turbines.
- Strong understanding of OEM preservation requirements for critical rotating equipment.
- Experience working within EPC, turnkey, and utility-scale energy projects.
- Knowledge of material management systems, warehouse operations, preservation programs, and turnover processes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex logistics and material controls for multi-million-dollar Power Plant and Heavy-Duty Turbine projects.
- Strong leadership, planning, reporting, and stakeholder management skills.
